Fashion Students Gain Experiential Learning in Global Retail Operations Course
Thu, May 16, 2019
Over the last 8 years, our Fashion Arts and Business program have established a WIN-WIN collaboration with the Vaughan Mills Shopping Center.
This collaboration provides our 4th-semester students the opportunity to work hands-on with Mall Leasing, Marketing & Tourism Management teams to create business concepts that meet the evolving needs of the retail center. Students draw on their knowledge from previous semesters and in the Global Retail Operations course are assigned their mission: To think like retail consultants and create or source business concepts that shopping centers can implement.
As a group, students review global retail trends, mall demographics & psychographics and select a business concept worth exploring. They prepare strategies for visual presentation, marketing and customer experiences that bring this concept to life. Their sales pitch to the mall management team provides them with an opportunity to hone their presentation and selling skills. This year our managers from Vaughan Mill said: “The students had great ideas, presented well and really did a great job in coming up with unique experiences. We will surely take some ideas away with us." In addition, Vaughan Mills took the next step, " We were so impressed by the caliber of students that we would like to arrange a JOB FAIR at Humber College.”
Congratulations to all of the students, who will be able to add this element of experiential learning to their personal resumes and portfolios. Thank you to their Professor, Anna Zamparo.
Fashion Professor Visits the Copenhagen Institute of Design and Technology
Thu, May 16, 2019
Rossie Kadiyska visited the Copenhagen Institute of Design and Technology to participate in knowledge exchange and build collaborative opportunities.
During the visit, Rossie Kadiyska observed classes in Biomimicry, Sustainable technologies and Design, met with Humber exchange students, conducted interviews with KEA students on sustainability and gave a guest lecture on sustainability framework in the luxury fashion.
The visit in Denmark was a peek into a world where sustainability is weaved into the everyday activities of the Danes and has become a permanent and inseparable part of their lives: from the daily commute with bicycles (2:1 per person) to sustainable buildings, healthy and slow food, sustainable textiles and fashion and the stress free Danish way of living "hygge".
During the trip, both sides explored opportunities for collaboration and deepening the partnership. As a result of the trip, our first Fashion Management and Promotions Graduate Certificate student will complete an internship with two Danish companies working in sustainable fashion and shoes.
Second Annual Aboriginal Moot Held at the Lakeshore Campus
Thu, May 16, 2019
On April 12, 2019, Paralegal Degree students held the Second Annual Aboriginal Moot at the Lakeshore Campus.
The Aboriginal Moot was the capstone assignment for students in the Indigenous Legal Perspectives course. To open the Second Annual Aboriginal Moot, students toured the Indigenous Cultural Markers recently installed at the Lakeshore campus.
The Faculty of Business is meeting Humber’s aspirations pursuant to the Indigenous Education Protocol, and has responded to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, by modifying the Paralegal Degree Program curriculum. The new course compares Aboriginal Law with Indigenous Legal Traditions. Professor Shirley Wales, a lawyer and former Adjudicator for the survivors of the Indian Residential Schools, designed and taught the new course. She incorporated research from her PhD studies, including the Indigenous Legal Traditions course taught by an Elder.
The Aboriginal Moot follows the format of the Kawaskimhon National Aboriginal Moot. Most Canadian Law Schools participate in the Kawaskimhon National Aboriginal Moot. The Moot is also known as “The Talking Circle”. Students engage in roundtable negotiations with the aim of reaching a consensus-based settlement. They rely on Indigenous Legal Traditions, as well as provincial, federal, and international law. The students were honoured to be joined at the Second Annual Aboriginal Moot by Associate Dean James Cullin, and by Paralegal Degree faculty members Dr. Karen Schucher and Dr. John Allen.

Recommendations and suggestions were clearly welcomed and are considered for implementation. Well done Teams! We look forward to their continued growth and success from Humber and beyond.
Thanks to Wendy Burgess for her dedication to our industry partners and especially to our H-HROM students. Long hours were devoted both in and out of the classroom (industry meetings and calls, student coaching and advising sessions, encouraging pep talks) and her dedication shone when we saw the smiles on the students' faces as well as the strong nods from the industry professionals.
As well, thank you to the many HRT team members who supported the students throughout this course and semester. To Janet and Stephanie, thank you for attending the presentations to provide moral support and to meet with the industry partners.

Accounting Diploma Students Place Third in Ontario College Accounting Case Competition
Wed, April 17, 2019
Two student teams from the Accounting Diploma programs participated in the Ontario College Accounting Case Competition, hosted by Sheridan College.
Our teams were part of our Case Competition course, which provides a new business case each week for students to prepare under time pressure, and present in front of their peers and professors. The course is a great way for students to improve their communication skills and hone their business acumen. The teams we sent to the final competition were a shining example of the excellent students coming out of our Accounting Diploma program.
Due to an administrative glitch, our two teams competed against each other in the preliminary round, which meant that only one team could qualify for the finals competition. During the finals, our team performed well, finishing in third place, province-wide!
We are very proud of all of our Case Competition students, and the faculty that volunteered to coach teams outside of class time! We look forward to many more successful competitions in the future!

Ensuring good physical and psychological health and safety (PH&S) in the workplace is vitally important for all Canadians.
Through an interdisciplinary approach between the Business School and School of Health Sciences, Dr. Suzy Casimiro and her students were invited to visit, investigate and advance the physical and psychological health and safety (PH&S) at Humber Valley Terrace Long Term Care Home, Etobicoke.
Under the supervision of the Executive Director at Humber Valley Terrace, Marjorie Mossman, students identified the physical hazards and explored possible psychosocial hazards of workers within this healthcare setting. By also adopting sections of the new and – the first of its kind in the world, Canadian Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace (CSA-Z1003-13), students explored the many ways that jobs can affect health and safety, from potential exposures to physical hazards, to work-related mental health concerns within healthcare settings.
As a result, students were able to make recommendations on how to improve the policies, procedures and offer health & wellness program options. Overall, recommendations focused on improving the physical and organizational environment to lessen risks of injury and illness; from integrated protection from work-related safety and health hazards to the promotion of injury and illness prevention and the introduction of wellness programs- all to advance both workers’ well-being and the organization.

Thu, April 11, 2019
On March 16th, 2019, World Wildlife Foundation conducted its first event of the year, "Living Planet@Campus: Designing Change for a Living Planet."
Over 80 students from over 15 colleges and universities around Ontario participated in the event, including students from The Business School.

The day-long event saw team work at its best as team Humber worked very hard on its idea and presentation. Collaborating with students from different fields helped participants gain an insight into what the issues faced by other industries are and forced students to think outside the box.
Despite the fact that the Humber team did not win first place, the team's idea inspired the Office of Sustainability to install an art piece made out of paper cups to spread awareness on the importance of carrying personal reusable mugs. The outcome was highly rewarding as students learned how an idea can transform and make a difference in the world today.

Eight teams from Centennial, George Brown, Conestoga, Seneca, and Humber participated this year for the Eastern Regional in hopes of moving on to compete against the Western Regional champion at the CIFP National Conference. The Value of Study Abroad from a Student’s Perspective
Mon, April 08, 2019
Meet Sagar Vankwani from the Bachelor of Commerce, Accounting Program.
Sagar had the opportunity to participate in a study abroad program at Hungkuang University in Taichung, Taiwan, which he describes as the best two weeks of his life:
"In summer 2018, I had the opportunity to participate in a study-abroad program at Hungkuang University in Taichung, Taiwan. It was a two-week program, and arguably, they were the best two weeks of my life. No exaggeration.
The program was a complete package in itself. Going there, I didn't have really high expectations, but I soon discovered many of the best things that come in life are unexpected. The Taiwanese students went out of their way to help us. The program itself was very well organized. We had Chinese language classes every morning accompanied by different vocational workshops and field trips to the most exotic places in Taiwan.
Apart from all this, the program taught me something that I wouldn't have learned otherwise. I learned more about myself and my skills and abilities. I also learned some things about me that I was unaware of like my adaptability to ambiguous situations—something I could not learn in the classroom. Through making new friends from a variety of countries, I now understand the value of making lasting connections as a way to expand my personal network. The memories I made will last a lifetime. I even found a home in Taiwan—a loving mother that calls me her son. I am still in touch with her and all my new friends. I've promised them that I'll visit Taiwan again soon.
Out of all the advice that I can give to other students, I would just say: Close your eyes to any excuses. Pack your bags and just go! I would like to thank Humber’s Business School for selecting me to participate in this program. I feel honoured and grateful for the opportunity and the experience I had."

REC Students Impress Guests with Their Business Pitches
Thu, March 14, 2019
Having a good business idea is just the first step in starting a successful business.
Our Recreation and Leisure students know first-hand the steps involved; having created unique business ideas of their own as a part of their Entrepreneurship class. On March 5th, we held an Entrepreneurship Tradeshow here at Humber College. At the event, our students had the opportunity to pitch their business ideas to faculty and staff members of the Humber Community as well as guests that work within the industry.
When planning a business, it is important that those behind the business fully understand all the logistics involved, and are able to communicate them effectively to potential investors. Many logistics needs to be considered in the planning process such as establishing the target markets, conducting a SWOT analysis and planning the finances. During the Sales Concept Fair, our students were able to demonstrate their knowledge by pitching their business to the guests in attendance. The guests were also encouraged to challenge the students by asking questions regarding their business plans that may not have been answered during the original pitch. This allowed our students to exercise speaking in front of unfamiliar faces and encouraged them to be prepared for any question a potential investor may have. The students have many great business ideas, and several students plan to bring their vision to life in the near future.
Many thanks to the industry guests and Humber community who took time out of their busy day in order to attend our Entrepreneurship Tradeshow. Your presence made all the difference!

Humber’s Advanced Chocolate and Confectionery Students Melt Hearts with Their Hand-Crafted Confections
Fri, March 01, 2019
February 14th at Humber College didn’t have a dull moment.
From rose sales in Gourmet Express to cookie decorating in the Learning Resource Centre, there was something for everyone. This past Valentine’s Day, the Advanced Chocolate and Confectionary students had something special to offer the Humber community: handcrafted chocolate bonbons. As a part of their Bakery Entrepreneurship and Innovation class, students were tasked with creating a chocolate bonbon that would be judged by the Baking and Pastry Arts Management faculty members and sold in a box of confections.
In addition to creating the chocolates, the students also had to order the boxes, purchase the ingredients, and assemble the boxes with its logo and packaging by hand. These aspects were taken into consideration when pricing the boxes, to ensure they were able to make a profit from their sales.
One hundred boxes were sold during the pre-sales. Due to high demand, an extra 50 boxes were made with the remaining chocolates. There were 151 boxes sold in total, including the box that was on display.
Congratulations to all the students and faculty involved in making this business adventure a success.

International Development Degree Alumnus Secures Job Post-Graduation
Wed, February 06, 2019
Ryan Geleynse, an International Development Degree grad, began working with EduDeo Ministries as the Eastern Canada Key Relationship Manager.
Upon graduation from the International Development Degree at Humber, Ryan Geleynse began working with EduDeo Ministries as the Eastern Canada Key Relationship Manager. EduDeo is an organization that works to advance and support Christian education around the world. Ryan’s job is to build relationships with EduDeo’s donors, whether households, schools, churches or foundations, and to find alignment between their passions and the organization’s projects.
Ryan secured a placement during his degree with World Renew, an organization linked to the Christian Reformed Church. His placement in the Global Volunteer Department became a source of income and employment as he completed his degree. World Renew places hundreds of volunteers in roles around the world every year to respond to disasters, work in community development or to service communities. Ryan loved that the organization’s volunteers would range from students to retirees.
Ryan says, “I’m so thankful for education I received at Humber. My degree provided a critical lens for engaging some of the challenges within the sector. I can approach our donors with confidence, knowing I’m there to advocate on behalf of our partners, providing necessary nuance to conversations that may head off the rails, otherwise. However, I miss the readings, the papers around topics I found provoking, and classroom discussions we had at Humber.”
Ryan married during his time at Humber College. His wife works in the international development field, too; however, her career has been suspended as she gave birth to their first child in July, Oliver, a baby boy. Congratulations!

In what has already been a fantastic year for the IMPG Program, all current students were hired before the end of their first semester.
In what has already been a fantastic year for the Insurance Management Program (IMPG) at Humber, all current students were hired in the insurance industry before the end of their first semester. Four students were even hired within the first three weeks of the program!
All of the IMPG students have now been hired part-time allowing them to pursue their full-time studies, with the potential of leading to full-time roles upon graduation.
These opportunities also allowed students to fulfill their 160 hour work placement component, learn the inner workings of the insurance industry, develop their professional network, and gain valuable experience.
IMPG students have had the chance to experience what they have learned in the classroom, such as working with insurance policies, and handling auto and property claims. Some students have even been promoted to appraising, and specialty lines units within their respected companies.
With a huge talent crisis on the rise with 27% of the industry expected to retire in the next 5 years, the Humber Insurance Management Program has worked vigorously to establish strategic partnerships with best in class companies in the industry.
A huge thank you to Claims Pro, Crawford and Company and Hub International for providing these opportunities to the Humber’s Insurance Management students. Your support is greatly appreciated.

On Thursday, November 22, 2018, the CRA paid a visit to over 120 students from various business programs.
The Business School Placement Centre is proud of its strong partnership with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Currently, thirteen Humber College business students are completing their work term this semester with the CRA.
Gladstone Sue, Assistant Director at the CRA, along with several CRA team members presented on available co-op and graduate opportunities. The information session discussed opportunities for both students and graduates and gave insight into the work culture of the CRA.
After the session, the CRA partners encouraged questions from the crowd and then participated in a networking session to meet Humber talent. All in all, participants left the room feeling invigorated by the positive benefits that come along with working for the CRA. Students and graduates are encouraged to monitor the CRA website on a regular basis, in order to apply to the exciting opportunities that are bound to come out soon.

Culinary Students Get a Real Veal Experience
Tue, December 04, 2018
Veal is beef but the distinction is that it is sourced from calves instead of mature cattle.
Like every other kind of meat, there are multiple ways it can be prepared. Chef Stefan Czapalay and Chef David Song visited our culinary class here at Humber North to educate our students on all the various ways you can cook veal. They performed a demonstration right in front of our students and discussed what other food pairs well with it. After the demonstration, we had the opportunity to taste veal carpaccio, veal and risotto and more.
In addition, a local farmer came in to discuss the process in which they raise their calves, and how they are grain fed.
The winner of the veal competition held earlier this semester was also announced this evening. Congratulations to Samantha Simms, on receiving first place for her pimento smoked jerked veal sandwich. Samantha will be showcasing her talents at the Restaurant and Bar show in late February 2019.

Fashion Innovation Within Take Back The Tap
Tue, December 04, 2018
Fashion Management and Promotions students visited the Humber Lakeshore Welcome Center to explore the impact of waste on our environment.
The Take Back the Tap initiative was a collaboration between the Fashion Graduate Certificate program, Humber Sustainability and Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Center. In addition to learning about the most common pieces of garbage found in Lake Ontario and textile products that can be made from recycled materials, the students were able to engage with the speakers about how the fashion industry hurts our environment. Students engaged in an interactive discussion on steps we can make within our own personal lives and within the fashion supply chain to reduce and eliminate waste.
The fashion industry is one of the most impactful industries in waste and pollution. There are many things that we can do to eliminate waste, such as: reducing consumption of non-sustainable products, choosing to buy local or Canadian-made products that have not travelled around the globe, and finding ways to reuse garments and accessories in order to reduce the amount of textiles ending up in landfills. The visit reinforced Humber strategic priorities of career-ready citizens and innovation in education.

Hospitality Industry Networking Event
Mon, December 03, 2018
Having a well-established network has become an important part of any career.
The purpose of networking is to build relationships with other professionals in your field in order to share and retain knowledge, expand your connections and potentially open doors for future opportunities for yourself. On November 22nd, students enrolled in the Hospitality programs had the chance to participate in a networking event here at Humber North with several industry professionals.
The two-hour event consisted of a “speed dating” format allowing for four 10 minute networking sessions with the professional of their choice, with a three-minute window in between. The last hour consisted of an open networking session with snacks and refreshments, allowing students and guests to mix and mingle. The industry professionals in attendance varied from those in the event sector, general managers, association representatives as well as various hotel and food and beverage positions. This wide variety of professionals allowed for students to network with whomever they believed would be most beneficial for them based on their area of interest.

Mon, October 01, 2018
Humber welcomed 62 students from Ningbo University for an orientation program before the final year of their Business Administration program.
Having completed two years of business management study at our partner institution in China, students learned what is needed to be a successful post-secondary student in Ontario. The two education systems are different, and it is essential students understand what will be expected of them at Humber. The academic skills they learned during the August Orientation program will enable the students to adapt to a new style of teaching and learning. Using project-based learning, students had the opportunity to research a social problem common to both Canada and China, generate possible interventions and make recommendations in a final presentation and report.
To further improve their collaboration and problem-solving skills, students participated in Workshop Wednesdays. Students learned the importance of working collaboratively as a team to accomplish specific challenges. It has been a successful month full of learning and fun. Students are ready to begin their new academic year at Humber.

Insurance Management Program Achieves Great Success in First Year
Mon, October 01, 2018
In its inaugural year, the Insurance Management Ontario Graduate Certificate program saw tremendous success with a dedicated first cohort of students.
For those that don’t know, the IMPG prepares students for a variety of entry-level management career paths in the large and growing property and casualty insurance industry. Students can pursue careers in underwriting, claims, sales and others. Like all of the many programs at the Business School, the IMPG program is very demanding and requires students to complete not only Humber exams, but seven separate exams towards the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation. Students in last year’s program achieved higher CIP pass ratios than the overall national college average!
In addition, 95% of IMPG students in the program landed industry placement roles, with many of them landing full-time positions at best-in-class companies such as All-State, Aviva, Northbridge Insurance, Wawanesa Insurance, Crawford Independent Adjusters and Desjardins. The IMPG program success can be attributed to the hard work and dedication of Peter Madott, and a very committed and passionate faculty that includes Annette Palalas, Jason Mancini, Susan Kates, Troy Bynoe, Kelly Hopkins, John McNeil, Bill White and Patricia Cooper.
In its second year, the IMPG program looks to build on its achievements of 2017/2018 with an exciting group of students that are enrolled in the program.

Students Receive Excellent Results on CFA Level 1 Exams
Fri, September 28, 2018
8 Bachelor of Commerce - Finance students wrote the CFA Level 1 exam in June 2018 and 50% of them passed!
This is an excellent result given that on average, over the last 10 years, 40% of those writing the exam passed and most who write the exam are not recent graduates and many are 2nd and 3rd-time writers. We also had 2 students who graduated the year previously who did not pass on their 1st attempt and decided to re-take the CFA Level 1 exam. This time around, both of them passed, which brings the total pass rate of that year of students to 40%. This year, given the Humber BCom Finance Degree’s recognition as a CFA Institute Affiliated University, we are able to offer 15 scholarships to graduating finance degree students who write the CFA Level 1 exam in June 2019, which significantly reduces their cost to write the exam.

Parul University Students Participate in Leadership Beyond Boundaries Program
Mon, September 24, 2018
Students from Parul University, Humber’s academic partner in India, participated in a 2-week Leadership Beyond Boundaries program at Humber in August.
The students were introduced to systems and design thinking for social innovation. After selecting a complex social problem found in their home community they would like to explore more, the students used systems thinking as a tool to identify the relevant stakeholders and gain a better understanding of the system’s behaviour. Mapping the system allowed students to zoom out, learn how all the different parts of the system are interrelated and identify possible intervention points. Using a human-centred design approach, students then framed the problem and zoomed in on one solution that they could implement in their home community while being full-time students. By the end of the program, the Parul University students pitched a social enterprise as a solution to the problem. Both student groups revealed they hope to submit a proposal for start-up funding at Parul University in the following semester as they believe their solution is feasible and sustainable.

Humber Spa “Evaluapp” to Streamline Classroom Learning
Mon, June 18, 2018
George Paravantes MFA IxD, Program Coordinator Multimedia Design and Development, has helped the Humber Spa develop their "Evaluapp."
"The Humber Spa App is a Tablet Application focused on moving the conversion forward on Mobile Learning tools in the classroom. The Tablet Application is focused on helping facilitate the “Moment of Need” and feedback to students as a Mobile Learning Support Tool.
The tablet application has been designed using Human-Centered Design methods to better understand both the lab technologist and student needs. The Tablet App enables lab technologists to mark more effectively and share student feedback in real-time. The classroom tablet scenario can be either an assessment or an evaluation.
Many of the in-process evaluations and assessments technologists use in labs tend to be on paper and require a transfer to a digital LMS system which can delay crucial feedback for students. Timely feedback can help to progress students more confidently in a project in class. Critical feedback at the right moments can sometimes create the creative confidence we look to instill in the students' project and work.
Finally, the tablet application has been purposely designed to be used not just by one program at Humber but any program or school across the college that evaluates or assess in-process work. It imports banner students list and lets the technologist create Assessments and Evaluations with a rubric in a fast intuitive gesture-driven touch Interface."

David Hutcheon, Adjunct Professor in the Public Administration Program arranged for his students to see City Council’s Executive Committee meeting.
Monday, March 19, 2018, was a historic day for Toronto’s municipal governance. It was the first time that the city’s Executive Committee held its meeting outside of Toronto City Hall. The meeting was held at the Scarborough Civic Hall in Scarborough’s former municipal council chamber. It was also the last Executive Committee meeting attended by City Manager Peter Wallace who will become the first senior civil servant to serve at the top levels in three levels of government. Wallace is leaving the City to become Secretary of the Treasury Board in Ottawa. Prior to joining the city, he was a top civil servant at Queen’s Park serving as Deputy Minister of Finance and Secretary to Treasury Board and Deputy Minister and Associate Secretary of the Cabinet, Policy.
The city’s top bureaucrat tabled the much-delayed, “Long-term Financial Plan: The City of Toronto’s Roadmap to Financial Sustainability,” in which he outlined that if no new revenues are found, the city will have a $1.4 billion operating budget gap in 5 years. The report states that “there is a growing gap between council’s vision for Toronto and available funding.”

Thu, March 22, 2018
This year’s Nutrition Month is dedicated to unlocking the potential of food.
This means that nutrition educators, including our HRT students, are using this time to educate Canadians about the potential of food to fuel, discover, prevent, heal and bring us together.
Throughout Nutrition Month, groups and individuals around Canada host events to help move this goal forward. Our students did just that by planning an event right here at Humber North Campus. On March 21st, Nutrition students lined the concourse area with booths related to different nutrition topics. They educated guests on nutrition topics ranging from healthy eating for your heart and bones to the best diet for working out.
Guests also got to enjoy free food, games, and trivia, while snacking on healthy bites prepared by Nutrition students in our culinary labs. The preparation of homemade food for this event was yet another way that our students got to interact with the food and unlock it’s potential. This is a new undertaking this year for Nutrition Month!
Thanks to all of our students and staff who helped us unlock the potential of food for this year’s Nutrition Month!

International Development Students Aid Canadian Forces in their Refugee Crisis Training
Tue, December 19, 2017
For two weekends, students from the International Development postgraduate program lived on Trenton Base, assisting with a large readiness exercise.
This exercise - which lasted 6 days - involved ID students and Canadian Forces members role-playing a refugee crisis scenario. Humber students played a variety of roles during the 6-day educational exercise such as international aid workers, UN employees, refugees and general civil society, while the military members played themselves.
The students were asked to participate in the exercise by Lt. Col. Allan Best, an alumnus of Humber’s International Development Management Certificate program as well as a frequent guest speaker at Humber. In the evening, Lt. Col. Best and the military members received feedback about the day's events from ID students, which everyone present found very rich and informative. Initially, the military was only looking for bodies to play roles; however, after this experience, they are keen to formalize the partnership such that this happens once a year.
The Humber ID students were able to learn valuable skills through this unique opportunity, such as problem-solving, thinking under pressure and teamwork. They were able to see first-hand how international military actors respond to humanitarian situations, as well as their limitations in those scenarios.
Thank you to Lt. Col. Allan Best and the Canadian Forces for inviting our students to take part in this wonderful exercise, and to our International Development students for being dedicated and professional participants.

Following the presentation, students were invited to a Q&A session and on conclusion, were given added information about the website where students can access additional resources about this opportunity.
Professors Teach Entrepreneurship to Instructors in Ethiopia
Thu, September 21, 2017
Peter Sirois and Jim Skinner of the Business School recently returned from an assignment in Ethiopia where the year is 2010.
Not only do Ethiopians have a different calendar from ours, (theirs has thirteen months) but the clock is different as well. In Ethiopia, 1:00 AM is what we’d call 7:00 AM, because their clock cycle starts at our 6:00 AM (which is around dawn) and goes to 6:00 PM (dusk) which is 12:00 for them. Confusing? “Not really,” says Skinner “because the Ethiopians are very accommodating to our customs and generally translate the time into one that makes sense for us.”
He and Sirois were delivering training workshops on “the teaching of entrepreneurship” for instructors in the Ethiopian college system. In an attempt to modernize the economy, the Ethiopian government wants all college graduates to be trained in starting up their own businesses. However, this is a huge challenge for the many instructors charged with this task, since they have little entrepreneurial training or experience themselves. As well, instructional materials are in short supply and many of the rural areas still lack reliable broad band service. But Sirois points out that “what they lack in resources, they more than make up for with enthusiasm and hard work.”
The Business School at Humber was a natural choice for this project since it has a long history of preparing colleges in developing countries to deliver entrepreneurship training. Humber has successfully conducted many of these programs in Asia, Africa, South America and the Caribbean. So, was Ethiopia different? “Yes and No,” Sirois and Skinner agree.
Instructors in Ethiopia are accustomed to using lecture-based teaching methods, often with instructors writing notes on the board and students copying. In the rural areas of Ethiopia, which, for the most part, contain a large portion of the population, teachers have limited I.T resources at their disposal. Sirois and Skinner’s challenge was to use the martials they had at their disposal, as well as using more interactive teaching techniques to engage the students.
In this regard, the two professors feel they were successful. They taught multi-layered workshops that combined lectures, lessons and discussions about teaching entrepreneurship with interactive instructional activities that engaged students. The enthusiasm of the students was very apparent, as they would frequently volunteer answers and comments and displayed great joy and humor during interactive activities.
Sirois and Skinner also discovered that returning to the year 2017 was an adventure in itself: "The environment is unique, partly because of the altitude,” says Skinner. “Addis Ababa is around 8,000 feet so you can get a direct flight in there from Toronto, but coming back, if the plane had enough fuel to get to Toronto, it would be too heavy to take off in the thin Addis air. So all flights home go through London or one of the European hubs, in order to refuel.”
On the other hand, Sirois points out, “The people of Ethiopia are pretty much the same as people everywhere else in the world.” Even if they are living in 2010.

GBM Students Launch Humber GBM Student Association
Mon, September 11, 2017
This past June, students in the Global Business Management program launched the Humber GBM Student Association.
According to the GBM Association website, their mission is to “offer support and guidance to all Global Business Management students in transition from school to the Canadian labour market.”
Since the Association's launch, the management and executive teams have been busy organizing networking events, student and alumni meet-and-greets and workshops, as well as posting bi-weekly profiles of GBM alumni on the blog and composing and distributing monthly email newsletters.
To date, their biggest event was the Humber GBMSA Networking Event on July 18th, which was also the official launch of the GBM Student Association. The event was a huge success, as over 100 students, alumni and industry professionals attended. Current GBM students had the chance to interact with GBM alumni and listen to them speak about their work experiences during panel discussions.
It’s wonderful to see students take initiative, help their peers, network and launch new ventures like the GBM Student Association. It’s exactly the type of values and skills we teach at The Business School - this mindset and work ethic is essential for future success.
Congratulations to all those involved in the GBM Student Association. Keep up the great work, and we can’t wait to see what events and initiatives the GBM Student Association launches next.

Her only other prerequisite for admission was the successful completion of a course on EU Law. Furthermore, Shirley Wales, a professor in the Paralegal Studies degree program, and Bernie Aron, the Program Coordinator of the Paralegal Studies degree program provided strong academic references for Ms. Flynn who was an outstanding student in the degree program.
We're thrilled to see that Satu Flynn will continue to pursue her legal education at the graduate level at this prestigious institution. Congratulations and best of luck with your studies!
Business School Faculty Travel to European Partner Institutions
Fri, August 18, 2017
Four Business School faculty members participated in faculty exchanges between March and May, 2017.
Lynn McAuliffe, Melanie Shulman, Maria Racanelli and Mike Dover each had the exciting opportunity to spend upwards of a week at partner institutions in Denmark, The Netherlands and Austria.
During their stay at these institutions, the faculty members had the privilege of giving lectures and conducting workshops on their respective areas of expertise to international students and faculty.
Each institution hosted an International Week for its exchange partner faculty members. During the week's events, faculty from multiple countries networked, learned from one another and participated in lectures and workshops. Mike Dover participated in Lillebaelt Academy University of Applied Sciences’ first-ever International Week. Lillebaelt hosted a LEGO Serious Play Workshop for its visiting faculty.
The Business School values these international experiences for faculty as a way to further internationalize its curriculum. Participating faculty members get the unique opportunity to learn from international colleagues, share best practices, bring new ideas into their classroom and explore new ways to deepen academic partnerships.
All Work and No Play? The Ningbo Students From China Have Arrived at Humber
Wed, August 16, 2017
Students from the Humber-Ningbo partnership program had a busy August after arriving in Toronto on July 31st.
Participation in the five-week Orientation Program had students strengthening both their English-language and academic skills. The students had two deliverables at the end of the five-week program:
The August Orientation Program provided the platform needed to introduce students to the academic skills that are critical to their success at Humber. But the August Orientation was not only hard work, the students also played hard.
If you were downtown Toronto on Saturday, August 12, you may have witnessed groups of Ningbo students running around the city completing their Urban Challenge. Students were given clues to find five different stations where they had to successfully complete a puzzling task before getting their next clue. An alumnus of the Humber-Ningbo program returned to develop the most difficult Urban Adventure yet.
Welcome to our Ningbo students. We wish you the best of success during your stay at Humber!
Developing Empathetic Youth Leaders in the Leadership Beyond Boundaries Summer Program
Wed, August 16, 2017
The Business School welcomed students from our academic partners, Parul University in India and IMC University of Applied Sciences in Krems, Austria.
The came for a two-week Leadership Beyond Boundaries program.
Students participated in three modules: Global Leadership, Cross-Cultural Communications and Social Entrepreneurship. The theme that guided the curriculum was People, Planet and Profit. This short summer program was an introduction to youth leadership for positive social change. Students were asked to identify a social problem in their home country and then learned how to use templates in ideation to solve a problem. Students were also introduced to Lean Canvass—a model that students can use to begin developing their idea for a social enterprise.
At the end of the program, the student participants had two more creative problem-solving tools to add to their toolbox of essential skills. Moreover, the program resonated with the students. Students agreed that the Leadership Beyond Boundaries program helped them to better identify social problems and how they can make a difference.

Humber Business Faculty Member Volunteers at Mongolian University
Mon, August 14, 2017
Sanjukta Das, a Business Placement Advisor at the Humber School of Business, could have spent her annual vacation relaxing at the beach.
But, instead, she decided to convert her three weeks of relaxation into an exciting, meaningful and life-changing experience.
Working with the Leave for Change program, Sanjukta travelled to Mongolia and volunteered at the Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST) as a Youth Employability Skills Training Advisor.
Leave for Change is a program that is a part of Uniterra and is managed by two non-profit organizations: World University Service Canada (WUSC) and Canadian Centre for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI). Humber College is partnered with Leave for Change and sponsors full-time Humber employees to participate and volunteer their expertise around the globe.
During her tenure at MUST, Sanjukta conducted nine workshops with final semester students. She taught them marketing, interviewing and networking skills, as well as how to transition from university to the job market.
Along with meeting an amazing cohort of eager, bright students, Sanjukta met with twenty Mongolian recruiters from the government and private sectors. She shared with the group her knowledge of hiring best practices and techniques in Canada.
By far, the highlight of Sanjukta's stay in Mongolia was the MUST Networking Breakfast Event. The event saw HR heads from twelve different organizations, including several banks, come to the MUST campus to meet graduating students. Sanjukta was able to see her hard work and instruction pay off, as students mingled and introduced themselves to business professionals. In fact, eight students gained employment out of the conversations they had at the event.
Overall, the event felt like deja vu to Sanjukta, as it was very similar to networking events held at the Business School.
"Leave for Change has re-energized and reinvigorated my role as a Business Placement Advisor on a deeper level," said Sanjukta about her volunteer experience. "I myself am surprised how totally immersed I was into a new country and culture, and how much I learned from the experience of others and also about myself."
Congratulations to Sanjukta on this amazing work, and thank you for volunteering your time and knowledge to such a vital, worthy cause.
International Development Student Meets Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
Mon, July 31, 2017
International Development student, Nathaniel Taylor, had the opportunity of meeting and speaking with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Currently, Nathaniel is completing his work placement at the Heritage Lower Saint Lawrence nonprofit organization located in the Quebec village, Metis-sur-Mer. There, Nathanial is helping to serve the English speaking community in the area by mobilizing people and resources, and by promoting interests like improving their health services.
When he heard that the Prime Minister was making an appearance and speaking at a public event nearby, he immediately decided to attend after work.
At the event, Nathaniel had the unique opportunity to ask the Prime Minister if he had any advice for young Canadian professionals working in the international development field. Nathaniel also told the Prime Minister about his upcoming role as an Environmental Sustainability Officer with a Canadian organization called EQWIP HUBs working in Senegal.
His response was for Canadians in this field to work for smaller organizations who are working to improve the lives of women and girls. This is how we will achieve the greatest change in developing communities.
“This was a special moment for me,” said Nathanial about the Prime Minister’s response. “It has inspired me to do my best and effective work when I am in Senegal with EQWIP HUBS.”
Congratulations to Nathaniel on his success and best of luck with your work in Senegal.
Fashion Management Degree Students Apply their Experience During Capstone Course
Thu, June 29, 2017
Students in the Fashion Management degree program completed their capstone course this past spring.
The course was a major undertaking for the students, as they had to apply the knowledge, skills and experience they acquired throughout their years of study.
The objective of the 15-week course was to plan and design a start-up retail enterprise. Throughout the course, eight student groups had to create an original concept, focus on the customer experience and market the business. In fact, three groups substantially altered their business concepts within the first two weeks of the course. Everyone learned that adaptability and problem-solving are essential skills to have when planning a business venture.
Throughout the process, most students had to balance other courses, a full-time work schedule and personal commitments. It was an intense challenge, but it was an excellent lesson in time management and balancing priorities.
Thanks to Mark Stoiko, a Professor at The Business School, for teaching this class and offering students guidance and advice throughout the course. And thank you to the Fashion Management students in the capstone course for their hard work, creativity and dedication towards their business ventures.
