Fashion Students Gain Experiential Learning in Global Retail Operations Course
Thu, May 16, 2019
Over the last 8 years, our Fashion Arts and Business program have established a WIN-WIN collaboration with the Vaughan Mills Shopping Center.
This collaboration provides our 4th-semester students the opportunity to work hands-on with Mall Leasing, Marketing & Tourism Management teams to create business concepts that meet the evolving needs of the retail center. Students draw on their knowledge from previous semesters and in the Global Retail Operations course are assigned their mission: To think like retail consultants and create or source business concepts that shopping centers can implement.
As a group, students review global retail trends, mall demographics & psychographics and select a business concept worth exploring. They prepare strategies for visual presentation, marketing and customer experiences that bring this concept to life. Their sales pitch to the mall management team provides them with an opportunity to hone their presentation and selling skills. This year our managers from Vaughan Mill said: “The students had great ideas, presented well and really did a great job in coming up with unique experiences. We will surely take some ideas away with us." In addition, Vaughan Mills took the next step, " We were so impressed by the caliber of students that we would like to arrange a JOB FAIR at Humber College.”
Congratulations to all of the students, who will be able to add this element of experiential learning to their personal resumes and portfolios. Thank you to their Professor, Anna Zamparo.
Fashion Professor Visits the Copenhagen Institute of Design and Technology
Thu, May 16, 2019
Rossie Kadiyska visited the Copenhagen Institute of Design and Technology to participate in knowledge exchange and build collaborative opportunities.

The visit in Denmark was a peek into a world where sustainability is weaved into the everyday activities of the Danes and has become a permanent and inseparable part of their lives: from the daily commute with bicycles (2:1 per person) to sustainable buildings, healthy and slow food, sustainable textiles and fashion and the stress free Danish way of living "hygge".
During the trip, both sides explored opportunities for collaboration and deepening the partnership. As a result of the trip, our first Fashion Management and Promotions Graduate Certificate student will complete an internship with two Danish companies working in sustainable fashion and shoes.
Second Annual Aboriginal Moot Held at the Lakeshore Campus
Thu, May 16, 2019
On April 12, 2019, Paralegal Degree students held the Second Annual Aboriginal Moot at the Lakeshore Campus.
The Aboriginal Moot was the capstone assignment for students in the Indigenous Legal Perspectives course. To open the Second Annual Aboriginal Moot, students toured the Indigenous Cultural Markers recently installed at the Lakeshore campus.
The Longo Faculty of Business is meeting Humber’s aspirations pursuant to the Indigenous Education Protocol, and has responded to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, by modifying the Paralegal Degree Program curriculum. The new course compares Aboriginal Law with Indigenous Legal Traditions. Professor Shirley Wales, a lawyer and former Adjudicator for the survivors of the Indian Residential Schools, designed and taught the new course. She incorporated research from her PhD studies, including the Indigenous Legal Traditions course taught by an Elder.
The Aboriginal Moot follows the format of the Kawaskimhon National Aboriginal Moot. Most Canadian Law Schools participate in the Kawaskimhon National Aboriginal Moot. The Moot is also known as “The Talking Circle”. Students engage in roundtable negotiations with the aim of reaching a consensus-based settlement. They rely on Indigenous Legal Traditions, as well as provincial, federal, and international law. The students were honoured to be joined at the Second Annual Aboriginal Moot by Associate Dean James Cullin, and by Paralegal Degree faculty members Dr. Karen Schucher and Dr. John Allen.

Accounting Diploma Students Place Third in Ontario College Accounting Case Competition
Wed, April 17, 2019
Two student teams from the Accounting Diploma programs participated in the Ontario College Accounting Case Competition, hosted by Sheridan College.
Our teams were part of our Case Competition course, which provides a new business case each week for students to prepare under time pressure, and present in front of their peers and professors. The course is a great way for students to improve their communication skills and hone their business acumen. The teams we sent to the final competition were a shining example of the excellent students coming out of our Accounting Diploma program.
Due to an administrative glitch, our two teams competed against each other in the preliminary round, which meant that only one team could qualify for the finals competition. During the finals, our team performed well, finishing in third place, province-wide!
We are very proud of all of our Case Competition students, and the faculty that volunteered to coach teams outside of class time! We look forward to many more successful competitions in the future!

Under the supervision of the Executive Director at Humber Valley Terrace, Marjorie Mossman, students identified the physical hazards and explored possible psychosocial hazards of workers within this healthcare setting. By also adopting sections of the new and – the first of its kind in the world, Canadian Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace (CSA-Z1003-13), students explored the many ways that jobs can affect health and safety, from potential exposures to physical hazards, to work-related mental health concerns within healthcare settings.
As a result, students were able to make recommendations on how to improve the policies, procedures and offer health & wellness program options. Overall, recommendations focused on improving the physical and organizational environment to lessen risks of injury and illness; from integrated protection from work-related safety and health hazards to the promotion of injury and illness prevention and the introduction of wellness programs- all to advance both workers’ well-being and the organization.

The Value of Study Abroad from a Student’s Perspective
Mon, April 08, 2019
Meet Sagar Vankwani from the Bachelor of Commerce, Accounting Program.
Sagar had the opportunity to participate in a study abroad program at Hungkuang University in Taichung, Taiwan, which he describes as the best two weeks of his life:
"In summer 2018, I had the opportunity to participate in a study-abroad program at Hungkuang University in Taichung, Taiwan. It was a two-week program, and arguably, they were the best two weeks of my life. No exaggeration.
The program was a complete package in itself. Going there, I didn't have really high expectations, but I soon discovered many of the best things that come in life are unexpected. The Taiwanese students went out of their way to help us. The program itself was very well organized. We had Chinese language classes every morning accompanied by different vocational workshops and field trips to the most exotic places in Taiwan.
Apart from all this, the program taught me something that I wouldn't have learned otherwise. I learned more about myself and my skills and abilities. I also learned some things about me that I was unaware of like my adaptability to ambiguous situations—something I could not learn in the classroom. Through making new friends from a variety of countries, I now understand the value of making lasting connections as a way to expand my personal network. The memories I made will last a lifetime. I even found a home in Taiwan—a loving mother that calls me her son. I am still in touch with her and all my new friends. I've promised them that I'll visit Taiwan again soon.
Out of all the advice that I can give to other students, I would just say: Close your eyes to any excuses. Pack your bags and just go! I would like to thank Humber’s Business School for selecting me to participate in this program. I feel honoured and grateful for the opportunity and the experience I had."

REC Students Impress Guests with Their Business Pitches
Thu, March 14, 2019
Having a good business idea is just the first step in starting a successful business.
Our Recreation and Leisure students know first-hand the steps involved; having created unique business ideas of their own as a part of their Entrepreneurship class. On March 5th, we held an Entrepreneurship Tradeshow here at Humber College. At the event, our students had the opportunity to pitch their business ideas to faculty and staff members of the Humber Community as well as guests that work within the industry.
When planning a business, it is important that those behind the business fully understand all the logistics involved, and are able to communicate them effectively to potential investors. Many logistics needs to be considered in the planning process such as establishing the target markets, conducting a SWOT analysis and planning the finances. During the Sales Concept Fair, our students were able to demonstrate their knowledge by pitching their business to the guests in attendance. The guests were also encouraged to challenge the students by asking questions regarding their business plans that may not have been answered during the original pitch. This allowed our students to exercise speaking in front of unfamiliar faces and encouraged them to be prepared for any question a potential investor may have. The students have many great business ideas, and several students plan to bring their vision to life in the near future.
Many thanks to the industry guests and Humber community who took time out of their busy day in order to attend our Entrepreneurship Tradeshow. Your presence made all the difference!

Humber’s Advanced Chocolate and Confectionery Students Melt Hearts with Their Hand-Crafted Confections
Fri, March 01, 2019
February 14th at Humber College didn’t have a dull moment.
From rose sales in Gourmet Express to cookie decorating in the Learning Resource Centre, there was something for everyone. This past Valentine’s Day, the Advanced Chocolate and Confectionary students had something special to offer the Humber community: handcrafted chocolate bonbons. As a part of their Bakery Entrepreneurship and Innovation class, students were tasked with creating a chocolate bonbon that would be judged by the Baking and Pastry Arts Management faculty members and sold in a box of confections.
In addition to creating the chocolates, the students also had to order the boxes, purchase the ingredients, and assemble the boxes with its logo and packaging by hand. These aspects were taken into consideration when pricing the boxes, to ensure they were able to make a profit from their sales.
One hundred boxes were sold during the pre-sales. Due to high demand, an extra 50 boxes were made with the remaining chocolates. There were 151 boxes sold in total, including the box that was on display.
Congratulations to all the students and faculty involved in making this business adventure a success.
Nutrition Students Attend CAFP Fundraiser
Mon, February 25, 2019
A group of students attended the 45th ToP CAFP (Canadian Association of Foodservice Professionals) Toronto Professionals Celebration and Fundraiser.

This year’s event was held at the Boulevard Club, and was a formal Black-tie event. The Dean of the school of HRT sponsored a table giving several of our students the opportunity to attend the event. In addition, it also gives our students the chance to network with industry professionals.
The money raised during this fundraiser will be given out during the CAFP Student Awards Night on March 18th, 2019. Good luck to all of our student applicants!

International Development Degree Alumnus Secures Job Post-Graduation
Wed, February 06, 2019
Ryan Geleynse, an International Development Degree grad, began working with EduDeo Ministries as the Eastern Canada Key Relationship Manager.
Upon graduation from the International Development Degree at Humber, Ryan Geleynse began working with EduDeo Ministries as the Eastern Canada Key Relationship Manager. EduDeo is an organization that works to advance and support Christian education around the world. Ryan’s job is to build relationships with EduDeo’s donors, whether households, schools, churches or foundations, and to find alignment between their passions and the organization’s projects.
Ryan secured a placement during his degree with World Renew, an organization linked to the Christian Reformed Church. His placement in the Global Volunteer Department became a source of income and employment as he completed his degree. World Renew places hundreds of volunteers in roles around the world every year to respond to disasters, work in community development or to service communities. Ryan loved that the organization’s volunteers would range from students to retirees.
Ryan says, “I’m so thankful for education I received at Humber. My degree provided a critical lens for engaging some of the challenges within the sector. I can approach our donors with confidence, knowing I’m there to advocate on behalf of our partners, providing necessary nuance to conversations that may head off the rails, otherwise. However, I miss the readings, the papers around topics I found provoking, and classroom discussions we had at Humber.”
Ryan married during his time at Humber College. His wife works in the international development field, too; however, her career has been suspended as she gave birth to their first child in July, Oliver, a baby boy. Congratulations!
Every Insurance Management Student Hired before the End of the First Semester
Wed, February 06, 2019
In what has already been a fantastic year for the IMPG Program, all current students were hired before the end of their first semester.
In what has already been a fantastic year for the Insurance Management Program (IMPG) at Humber, all current students were hired in the insurance industry before the end of their first semester. Four students were even hired within the first three weeks of the program!
All of the IMPG students have now been hired part-time allowing them to pursue their full-time studies, with the potential of leading to full-time roles upon graduation.
These opportunities also allowed students to fulfill their 160 hour work placement component, learn the inner workings of the insurance industry, develop their professional network, and gain valuable experience.
IMPG students have had the chance to experience what they have learned in the classroom, such as working with insurance policies, and handling auto and property claims. Some students have even been promoted to appraising, and specialty lines units within their respected companies.
With a huge talent crisis on the rise with 27% of the industry expected to retire in the next 5 years, the Humber Insurance Management Program has worked vigorously to establish strategic partnerships with best in class companies in the industry.
A huge thank you to Claims Pro, Crawford and Company and Hub International for providing these opportunities to the Humber’s Insurance Management students. Your support is greatly appreciated.

They performed a demonstration right in front of our students and discussed what other food pairs well with it. In addition, a local farmer came in to discuss the process in which they raise their calves, and how they are grain fed.
The winner of the veal competition held earlier this semester was also announced this evening. Congratulations to Samantha Simms, on receiving first place for her pimento smoked jerked veal sandwich. Samantha will be showcasing her talents at the Restaurant and Bar show in late February 2019.

Students engaged in an interactive discussion on steps we can make within our own personal lives and within the fashion supply chain to reduce and eliminate waste.
The fashion industry is one of the most impactful industries in waste and pollution. There are many things that we can do to eliminate waste, such as: reducing consumption of non-sustainable products, choosing to buy local or Canadian-made products that have not travelled around the globe, and finding ways to reuse garments and accessories in order to reduce the amount of textiles ending up in landfills. The visit reinforced Humber strategic priorities of career-ready citizens and innovation in education.

Ningbo Students Attend Orientation Program at Humber
Mon, October 01, 2018
Humber welcomed 62 students from Ningbo University for an orientation program before the final year of their Business Administration program.
Having completed two years of business management study at our partner institution in China, students learned what is needed to be a successful post-secondary student in Ontario. The two education systems are different, and it is essential students understand what will be expected of them at Humber. The academic skills they learned during the August Orientation program will enable the students to adapt to a new style of teaching and learning. Using project-based learning, students had the opportunity to research a social problem common to both Canada and China, generate possible interventions and make recommendations in a final presentation and report.
To further improve their collaboration and problem-solving skills, students participated in Workshop Wednesdays. Students learned the importance of working collaboratively as a team to accomplish specific challenges. It has been a successful month full of learning and fun. Students are ready to begin their new academic year at Humber.

Insurance Management Program Achieves Great Success in First Year
Mon, October 01, 2018
In its inaugural year, the Insurance Management Ontario Graduate Certificate program saw tremendous success with a dedicated first cohort of students.
For those that don’t know, the IMPG prepares students for a variety of entry-level management career paths in the large and growing property and casualty insurance industry. Students can pursue careers in underwriting, claims, sales and others. Like all of the many programs at the Business School, the IMPG program is very demanding and requires students to complete not only Humber exams, but seven separate exams towards the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation. Students in last year’s program achieved higher CIP pass ratios than the overall national college average!
In addition, 95% of IMPG students in the program landed industry placement roles, with many of them landing full-time positions at best-in-class companies such as All-State, Aviva, Northbridge Insurance, Wawanesa Insurance, Crawford Independent Adjusters and Desjardins. The IMPG program success can be attributed to the hard work and dedication of Peter Madott, and a very committed and passionate faculty that includes Annette Palalas, Jason Mancini, Susan Kates, Troy Bynoe, Kelly Hopkins, John McNeil, Bill White and Patricia Cooper.
In its second year, the IMPG program looks to build on its achievements of 2017/2018 with an exciting group of students that are enrolled in the program.

Students Receive Excellent Results on CFA Level 1 Exams
Fri, September 28, 2018
8 Bachelor of Commerce - Finance students wrote the CFA Level 1 exam in June 2018 and 50% of them passed!
This is an excellent result given that on average, over the last 10 years, 40% of those writing the exam passed and most who write the exam are not recent graduates and many are 2nd and 3rd-time writers. We also had 2 students who graduated the year previously who did not pass on their 1st attempt and decided to re-take the CFA Level 1 exam. This time around, both of them passed, which brings the total pass rate of that year of students to 40%. This year, given the Humber BCom Finance Degree’s recognition as a CFA Institute Affiliated University, we are able to offer 15 scholarships to graduating finance degree students who write the CFA Level 1 exam in June 2019, which significantly reduces their cost to write the exam.

Parul University Students Participate in Leadership Beyond Boundaries Program
Mon, September 24, 2018
Students from Parul University, Humber’s academic partner in India, participated in a 2-week Leadership Beyond Boundaries program at Humber in August.
The students were introduced to systems and design thinking for social innovation. After selecting a complex social problem found in their home community they would like to explore more, the students used systems thinking as a tool to identify the relevant stakeholders and gain a better understanding of the system’s behaviour. Mapping the system allowed students to zoom out, learn how all the different parts of the system are interrelated and identify possible intervention points. Using a human-centred design approach, students then framed the problem and zoomed in on one solution that they could implement in their home community while being full-time students. By the end of the program, the Parul University students pitched a social enterprise as a solution to the problem. Both student groups revealed they hope to submit a proposal for start-up funding at Parul University in the following semester as they believe their solution is feasible and sustainable.

Humber Spa “Evaluapp” to Streamline Classroom Learning
Mon, June 18, 2018
George Paravantes MFA IxD, Program Coordinator Multimedia Design and Development, has helped the Humber Spa develop their "Evaluapp."
"The Humber Spa App is a Tablet Application focused on moving the conversion forward on Mobile Learning tools in the classroom. The Tablet Application is focused on helping facilitate the “Moment of Need” and feedback to students as a Mobile Learning Support Tool.
The tablet application has been designed using Human-Centered Design methods to better understand both the lab technologist and student needs. The Tablet App enables lab technologists to mark more effectively and share student feedback in real-time. The classroom tablet scenario can be either an assessment or an evaluation.
Many of the in-process evaluations and assessments technologists use in labs tend to be on paper and require a transfer to a digital LMS system which can delay crucial feedback for students. Timely feedback can help to progress students more confidently in a project in class. Critical feedback at the right moments can sometimes create the creative confidence we look to instill in the students' project and work.
Finally, the tablet application has been purposely designed to be used not just by one program at Humber but any program or school across the college that evaluates or assess in-process work. It imports banner students list and lets the technologist create Assessments and Evaluations with a rubric in a fast intuitive gesture-driven touch Interface."
