Professor Jasteena Dhillon and students from the Paralegal programs attended an event at the Empire Club of Canada, where Canada's Minister of Justice, the Honourable Arif Virani, advocated for the newly enacted Bill C-63, the Online Harms Act. This legislation mandates that online platforms address harmful content, fostering a safer online environment for all Canadians.

In his speech, "Where Online Harms Have Real World Consequences: The Case for Legislating Against Harm and Hate," Minister Virani asserted, "We expect to live in safe communities. We should expect the same thing in our online world, especially when it comes to protecting our kids and ensuring that everyone can express their opinions without being exposed to hate."

Professor Jasteena Dhillon and her students engaged in a discussion with the Minister about the legislation and its implications concerning the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, particularly the debate on hate speech as a limitation to Canada's Charter right to Freedom of Expression.
