On October 7th and 8th, students from the Fashion Arts and Business diploma program transformed ideas into eye-catching installations during their Build Up Display project at North Campus. The event took place in the fully equipped studio space (H341) and marked the students’ first major assignment for FASH 230: Store Planning and Merchandising.
The project challenged students to design and execute professional-quality visual displays as part of their growing portfolios, a valuable opportunity to develop real-world skills for future careers in the creative field of visual merchandising.
Under the guidance of Professor Kim Rich, students showcased trendy fashion accessories while applying key industry techniques to attract attention, including thoughtful composition, use of colour and props, repetition, lighting, motion, humour, and creative rearrangement.
Each team completed a detailed planning phase that involved sourcing accessories, drafting wall and floor plans, designing signage, and selecting props to bring their concepts to life. During the two-hour installation window, students worked collaboratively to execute their vision with precision and creativity.
Themes were inspired by visual relationships between products and props, exploring elements like colour, texture, shape, and narrative. Concepts ranged from a terrarium snake theme and western-inspired displays to delicate floral installations and metallic, high-glam looks.
In total, ten groups participated, and their outstanding work is now featured on the third floor of the Fashion District at North Campus. Visitors are encouraged to stop by and experience the creativity and innovation on display.
