Be Placement Ready Event Equips Students for Job and Internship Success

The Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) Centre was excited to take part in the Be Placement Ready event held on March 20th as part of Career Month. The event aimed to equip students with the tools and resources needed to identify the essential skills, knowledge, and experience required to secure a job or internship in their program of study.

The event saw a strong turnout, with students approaching the booths with insightful questions about their curriculum-based placement courses. It provided an excellent opportunity to foster a sense of community among students, as well as offer networking and socializing opportunities outside of the classroom. The feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive, with many recognizing that being placement ready requires time and effort, and emphasizing the importance of patience and persistence in their job search.

The event was represented by:

  • CareerConnect: Highlighted strategies for students to optimize their use of the Humber student job portal to secure placements and internships.
  • Devant: Students received information about the upcoming launch of Devant, a new online platform that offers tools such as a resume builder, interview prep support, Get Hired Masterclass, and more.
  • WIL Faculty Offices: Students had the chance to engage with placement advisors from various faculties to discuss their concerns about placements and internships.
  • Rapid Resume Reviews: Students received resume assistance and participated in rapid resume reviews with Career Support Peers.
  • IGNITE Glow Scholarships: Students pursuing unpaid placements were provided with the opportunity to apply for a GLOW (Give Learners Opportunities to Work) scholarship, which offers funding support during their placement and guidance throughout the application process.
  • IE & E - RBC Programs for Indigenous Students and Graduates: As part of their commitment to promoting the success of Indigenous students, RBC has formed a partnership with Humber College to provide support and resources to help students prepare for graduation and enter the workforce. RBC Representatives were available to chat with students and provide further information on the program.

Students were reassured to learn that Humber College offers a range of career services to support their job search journey. These services include resume and cover letter reviews, mock interviews, job search assistance, and career fairs where students can personally interact with employers. They were also informed about the workshops and events hosted by the Career Centre and WIL Centre, which provide further opportunities to learn about job search strategies and network with potential employers.

The Be Placement Ready event was a valuable initiative organized by the WIL Centre during Career Month and served as an important platform for students to gather information and resources to enhance their employability. The WIL Centre remains committed to supporting students in their career development journey and looks forward to organizing similar events in the future.
