On November 26, our class of Product Management (MGMT 4002) led by our Professor and Program Coordinator Hanadi Alnawab held something that we had never done before, a full Podcast Showcase built around the theme of Aging. Just like all other assignments, this started off like a class project which later turned into one of the most valuable learning experiences of this semester.

At the beginning of the semester when we were introduced to our topic for the podcast, ‘Aging’, most of us did not really connect well with the topic since it was not something we spent a lot of time thinking about. But everything slowly shifted when Sue and Nadia took the time to visit our class in the early weeks. They motivated us with their insights and real world experience which made us realize how important this topic was. From then, all the groups started building something to represent real people and real issues, and not just material for an assignment.

Fast forward to the main showcase day, the whole class had transformed. We all were walking into the class with our posters, branding, podcasts and a lot of energy. Every group had something unique to put up- different logos, coloured posters, visuals and a lot more. The room was looking alive, colourful and filled with enthusiasm.

As the guests began to arrive, the atmosphere had changed. We had industry professionals, professors and visitors slowly walk around the room and stop at every table. They took the time to listen to everything that we had to explain, interact with groups by engaging in quick games, asking questions and most importantly sharing valuable feedback. The visitors were able to connect to what we were presenting and they made us all feel heard and accomplished and they engaged with us in a way which made our journey feel meaningful.

We also had guests who took the time to share their experience with us by sharing a few words about their experience.

Melanie said, “I was very impressed with all of the podcast ideas and presenters. Great ideas and great implementation. It was great seeing such young minds think of possible problems faced by the aging population.”

Sue, who has supported us since the start, shared, “It is pretty great to see such talent and groups taking on such challenging topics. In my field of aging, we need ideas and creativity from the younger generation. In a very short period of time, everyone did a lot which was very inspiring and energizing.”

And, even Nadia reflected on how far we have come, “People often think 22 year olds are not interested in aging, but yes, they are. They do not have a choice, it is a part of everyone’s future. The difference between the first time we met and today is just unbelievable with the way all the students showed up for this.”

After communicating with the guests, the entire journey felt like an achievement. The podcast was not just any assignment, but a valuable learning experience to do something real. It taught us how to communicate, organize, manage, research and a lot more. We worked as product managers with hands-on experience.

A special thanks to Hanadi for giving us this chance to create something valuable for our future. And, we cannot forget Sue and Nadia for giving us their time, sharing their knowledge, experience and being a part of this course.
