Work-Integrated Learning Initiative for Accounting Students with Intuit TurboTax Receives Positive Feedback

Every tax season many of our Accounting students, completing their Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) placements, work with tax firms across the GTA. However, this year, a unique internship placement in taxes was brought to Humber. Intuit, the organization that develops the tax preparation software, TurboTax, had what turned out to be, a great WIL opportunity for students.

Our Professional Accounting Practice Graduate Certificate alumna, Nicola Lewis, who is currently working at Intuit, contacted Professional Accounting Practice Program Coordinator Leandra Acevedo about Intuit’s TurboTax Champions Community.

After meeting with Intuit representatives, accounting Program Coordinators, and the WIL Centre Placement Advisor, a placement opportunity for several students was developed. This placement provided students in the Accounting Diplomas and Grad Certificate with an opportunity to put into practice their tax knowledge as they responded to questions from TurboTax clients. For many students, they not only sharpened their knowledge but also their research skills related to personal taxes.

Twenty-four students completed all or part of their placement hours and gained real-world experience in tax preparation. Student feedback was very positive about this placement as a skills-building and learning experience. For some students, this placement also increased their interest in a career in taxes!

Intuit was very happy with our student performance and the WIL team plans to continue this wonderful TurboTax Champions Community partnership in the future.
