Humber's Bachelor of Paralegal Studies students made a notable impact at the 2023 Osgoode Cup National Undergraduate Mooting Competition, held at Osgoode Hall Law School in March. Two dedicated teams from the program showcased their legal prowess by arguing both sides of an appeal derived from the Supreme Court of Canada's decision in R. v. Tessier 2022 SCC 35 (S.C.C.). This case centred around the admissibility of a statement given to the police officers prior to the accused person being cautioned.
An exceptional display of legal acumen was consistently demonstrated by a team from Humber, comprised of third-year honours students Anamika Singh and Johann Uy, as they achieved an impressive average proficiency score surpassing 80 percent throughout the four rounds of the competition. Anamika Singh's individual score of 82.6 percent stands as a notable accomplishment.
Equally noteworthy was the performance of the other team, comprised of two second-year honours students Maria Rausch and Dion Desserre, who secured victories in three out of their four rounds. Notably, Maria achieved an outstanding individual score of 83 percent.
Participating alongside approximately 100 other teams, Humber's representatives exhibited exceptional advocacy skills and delivered strong performances at this prestigious mooting competition, cementing their reputation as formidable contenders in the field.
