Humber Polytechnic made a significant impact at the 2025 Osgoode Cup National Undergraduate Mooting Competition, marking a strong presence with six mooting teams representing the institution. The Osgoode Cup, Canada’s oldest and most prestigious mooting competition, saw participation from 124 teams across major universities, including the University of Toronto, McGill University, McMaster University, Carleton University, York University, and the University of Calgary.
Humber’s top mooting team, Maria Rausch and Dion Desserre, achieved an impressive fourth-place ranking after the first day of competition and advanced to the round of 16, earning medals for their outstanding performance. Additionally, Maria Rausch was honoured with a Distinguished Oralist Award, securing an exceptional third place out of 248 individual competitors.
Humber’s representation extended beyond Maria and Dion, with five additional teams composed of first-year, third-year, and fourth-year Paralegal Studies students. These teams included Grace Haapala and Kiran Matharu; Emily Clayton and Borna Yazdani; Kitsym Currie and Jacob Castiglione; Mia Papazian and Aysha Patel; and Vir Rohera and Maria Laurenava. The teams were expertly coached by Paige Diebel, a Litigation Paralegal with Aviva Insurance and a Humber alumna who herself received a Distinguished Oralist Award at the 2015 Osgoode Cup.
Humber’s influence was further highlighted by its strong presence on the judging panels. Seven graduates of Humber’s Paralegal Studies degree program—all former Osgoode Cup participants—served as judges, including Fallon Burns, Tudor Gagea, Danny Pallag, Breanne Peacock, Mushfiq Mawla, Sabrina Lombardi, and Laura Della Donne. They were joined by fourth-year student Gabriel Truchan, who previously provided support at the 2024 Capital Cup in Ottawa.
For over a decade, Humber Polytechnic has proudly upheld a tradition of excellence in national undergraduate mooting competitions, and this year’s achievements at the Osgoode Cup further solidify its reputation as a leader in legal education and advocacy.
