Pierre-Pascal Gendron, Professor and Program Co-ordinator of the Bachelor of Commerce – Healthcare Management program, and faculty member for ECON 3500: Health Economics, contributed his expertise as an examiner for a Ph.D. thesis in Regional Economics presented in Mexico. The thesis, authored by Carlos Manuel Milanés Pérez, was entitled “Impacto Económico y Sanitario de las Industrias de Bebidas y Tabaco en México: Un Análisis Integral” [The Economic and Health Impacts of Beverage and Tobacco Industries in Mexico: A Comprehensive Analysis].

The thesis examined key areas including industrial linkages, the distributional effects of excise taxes on alcoholic beverages, sugar-sweetened drinks, and tobacco products, as well as the public health implications of beverage and tobacco consumption. Carlos’ research offered valuable insights into the economic and health consequences of these industries, earning him a distinction for his work. His home institution was the Centro de Investigaciones Socioeconómicas (CISE), Universidad Autónoma de Coahuila, Saltillo, Mexico.

Pierre-Pascal co-supervised the thesis alongside Professor Nicholas Sisto, a faculty member at CISE. The collaboration between Pierre-Pascal and Nicholas began in the winter 2019 term when Nicholas served as a visiting professor at the Longo Faculty of Business, teaching three courses. Later that year, Pierre-Pascal travelled to CISE to deliver a short course in health economics, further fostering academic exchange and international collaboration.
