HLOs:
There’s no better way to learn business than by doing business—and that’s exactly what students in Humber Polytechnic’s Business Management and Business Administration diploma programs are doing.
As part of their Applied Business Management (BMGT 299) course, students recently planned, promoted, and hosted a sold-out campus event called “Kahoot and Sip.” Designed to simulate a real-world entrepreneurial venture, the event gave students full ownership over every stage of the process—from concept and marketing to purchasing, execution, and evaluation.
The goal? To bring classroom learning to life. BMGT 299 offers students hands-on experience running a small business operation. Students form teams, invest a nominal amount of capital, and manage their own venture throughout the term, learning how to apply key business concepts in a controlled, low-risk setting. From developing business strategies to managing operations, every assignment in the course directly supports the real-world business they are running.
Set against a tropical theme to help students beat the winter blues, Kahoot and Sip featured refreshing mocktails, hot samosas, lively music, and a competitive Kahoot trivia game with prizes. The result was an inviting, high-energy event that quickly exceeded expectations, selling out not once, but twice, thanks to overwhelming demand.
“Our approach to engagement was key,” the team explained. “People appreciated the warm atmosphere and the effort we made to personally connect with everyone.”
Behind the scenes, students gained experience in marketing, budgeting, operations, and customer service, drawing from every corner of their business education. “We had to restock mid-event to keep up,” shared one team member. The students also developed essential soft skills in teamwork, adaptability, and leadership. “It was hectic, but exciting. We got to experience the real challenges of supply and demand in real time.”
“Our team was made up of students from different programs—most of us hadn’t worked together before,” one student reflected. “Learning how to collaborate across different personalities and work styles was one of the most valuable takeaways.”
Looking back, the team offered this advice to future students: “Expect the unexpected. Overprepare where you can. Stock more than you think you’ll need, communicate clearly, and have a backup plan. And if things don’t go perfectly? Learn from it and keep going.”
Events like Kahoot and Sip are a shining example of how Humber Polytechnic’s Business Management and Business Administration diploma program transforms business theory into practice, preparing students not just to succeed in the classroom, but to lead in the real world.
Congratulations to the students in the class, and a special thank you to faculty members Peter Sirois and Robert Bolf for their ongoing mentorship and support in the BMGT 299 course.
