The Grounds for Change Hackathon was a collaboration with TU Dublin, Humber’s Office of Sustainability, and Evergreen Brick Works.
The event began on October 22 with a live virtual kickoff that brought together Entrepreneurship students from TU Dublin and students from across four Humber faculties: The Longo Faculty of Business, The Faculty of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology, and The Faculty of Social and Community Services. Two live synchronous workshops followed, along with a final award ceremony in December.
Students were challenged to answer the question: How might we create and promote accessible and welcoming spaces for people to connect in urban environments?
In the end, 12 ambitious student teams submitted pitches to a judging panel consisting of Gavan Cleary and Anthony Buckly from TU Dublin, Mike Driedger from Evergreen Brick Works, and Leslie Morton an urban planner and landscape architect from Toronto firm, DTAH.
An additional prize of 500 Euro was split between the top Irish and top Canadian teams. The prize was supported by Innovate4Sustainability, an initiative of GROWTHhub at TU Dublin and is supported by the Higher Education Authority in Ireland.
Humber students also received funding support from Experience Ventures and the Employability Experience Fund. Congratulations to all participating teams for their thoughtful and creative ideas to help shape more accessible, sustainable, and welcoming urban spaces.
