Susan Kates, Faculty member of the Longo Faculty of Business along with a team of five talented students from a range of programs across Humber participated in the 2023 KEA Charrette.

The KEA Charrette is a five-day intensive and collaborative process, that serves as an exceptional platform bringing together students, community members, and professionals to address complex issues. Through a few days of intense brainstorming, discussions, and expert consultations, teams generated a wide array of ideas centred around a specific theme.

The core objective of a Charrette is to inspire creativity, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and yield innovative design and planning proposals. It also facilitates active engagement with stakeholders and the community, allowing for a multitude of perspectives to be considered.

Susan and her team worked alongside students from various backgrounds and institutions across the globe. Together, they embarked on the task of tackling the theme of urban mining. The teams embraced the intricate challenge of urban mining, dedicating themselves to exploring innovative sustainability concepts. In a display of creativity and ingenuity, they repurposed discarded cardboard sourced from the local community, using a 3D printer to craft chess pieces that could be used at community chess tables - contributing to a sustainable and engaging solution.

The culmination of their efforts took place during the final presentation, where students had a mere ten minutes to showcase their solutions. This presentation included a 3-minute video, a comprehensive PowerPoint, a prototype, and a one-pager for the expert judging panel. Their dedication and hard work shone through as they accomplished these tasks in just five days, making use of whiteboards, brainstorming, the double diamond model, design thinking, and enduring sleepless nights to complete their designs.

Humber students Joey Alvarez Gill, Gabriele Svazaite, Iben Munch Thomasen, Klara Kami, Louise Anette Zuber, Sesil Metin Tasim, Simon Henry Jorgensen, and Yanjun Liu, represented a diverse range of programs with knowledge ranging from architecture, construction, fashion, and media arts. All of the students were scattered across various teams, contributing their expertise to their group's design solutions.

The 2023 KEA Charrette featured two awards: the People's Choice and the Judges' Choice. Many of the Humber students emerged as winners, a testament to their commitment and exceptional skills.

Congratulations to all the participants of the KEA Charrette, showcasing the power of collaboration and innovation within the academic community and beyond.
