During her studies in the Paralegal Education diploma program from 2021-2023, Devyn Porte encountered a pivotal turning point: a mandatory course titled BCTA 251: Mediation and Arbitration: Alternative Dispute Resolutions led to a trusted professor encouraging her to consider a career in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) over the traditional paralegal path. Although she was drawn to law and access to justice, this advice stayed with her.
Upon completing her diploma, Devyn prepared rigorously for her P1 (Paralegal) licensing exam, which she passed in July 2023. Remembering her interest in ADR and her professor’s guidance, she applied to the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) graduate certificate program and was accepted, beginning her studies in September 2023. At the same time, she officially became a licensed paralegal and notary public.
In her ADR program, Devyn developed an interest in Community Mediation the concept of and Restorative Justice, "an approach to justice that seeks to repair harm by providing an opportunity for those harmed and those who take responsibility for the harm to communicate about and address their needs in the aftermath of a crime." During her third semester, she completed a field placement with the Toronto Bail Program, working as a bail supervisor. She supported vulnerable clients by overseeing bail conditions, preparing warrant packages, and observing court proceedings. While completing her internship over the summer, Devyn began searching for jobs in the ADR field.
After completing her placement, Devyn secured a role as an Intake Analyst with the Fair Practices Commission, the organizational ombudsman for the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board of Ontario (WSIB). The mission of the Fair Practices Commission is to facilitate fair, equitable and timely resolutions to individual complaints brought by workers, employers and service providers and to identify and recommend system-wide improvements to WSIB services. The Commission operates impartially and at arm’s length from the management and operations of the WSIB. As an Intake Analyst, Devyn is the first point of contact for complaints, determining the best resolution method and engaging in early resolution processes. Her role in ensuring fair treatment for workers and employers has brought a profound sense of fulfillment.
Reflecting on her journey, Devyn expressed gratitude to Mary Lee, the ADR Program Coordinator, noting, “My experience in the ADR program was wonderful and supportive. It was nothing short of amazing from start to finish. The program opened doors I never knew were possible.” Initially uncertain about her career path, Devyn now finds purpose and confidence in her work as an Intake Analyst, empowered by the skills she gained in her ADR education.
