The Centre of Entrepreneurship (CfE) extended a work-study opportunity to Kaelani Do, a third-year Bachelor of Commerce - Fashion Management student, to spearhead the development of a website for the Fashion History Project.
Under the guidance of Francesca D’Angelo, Kaelani's Fashion History Professor, and Hanadi Alnawab, her Web Development Professor, Kaelani embarked on a project pivotal to the forthcoming Fashion History Project exhibit scheduled to launch at the end of the Fall semester. From September through December, Kaelani engaged in a continuous process, gaining insights from two distinct vantage points. She navigated the roles of service provider and client of a web developer, culminating in a highly instructive learning experience.
While Kaelani constructed the website, her Fashion Management peers assembled their respective pieces for display. Her collaborative efforts with Professor Alnawab resulted in a platform showcasing the display pieces and connecting it seamlessly with her contribution. Every informational card featured a QR code, directing visitors to the relevant section on the website housing the pieces on display.
Reflecting on the project, Kaelani expressed, "This project was memorable and an amazing learning experience. Working alongside exceptional mentors allowed me to discover new facets of my capabilities. The skills and insights gained here will shape my future endeavours, whether in professional roles or upcoming academic projects. To fellow students presented with similar opportunities, I encourage seizing them. It is a chance to learn, and make mistakes within a supportive environment fostered by professors and faculty."
The inaugural Fall 2023 exhibit marked a resounding success, transcending the boundaries of textbooks and lectures by transforming student narratives into vivid historical displays. A collaborative endeavour, it redefined conventional assignments, empowering students to curate immersive exhibits intertwining past narratives with the contemporary—an innovative approach that breathed life into history within the academic setting.
