Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone: Choosing to Study Abroad

During the Winter Semester of 2024, I had the opportunity to study at Robert Gordon University (RGU) in Aberdeen, Scotland, and it was an experience I’ll cherish forever. Raised in Canada, the chance to live halfway across the world presented a unique way to push my limits. Being in a completely new timezone and environment, far from loved ones, was both exhilarating and humbling. It taught me resilience, adaptability, and the value of embracing diverse cultures.

Cultural Immersion: Learning About the World Through Friendships

As an exchange student, I was surrounded by other international students, and RGU’s Erasmus program helped us connect through events and city tours across Scotland. Through these friendships, I not only immersed myself in Scottish culture but also learned about Italian, French, and German customs. I speak six languages, but my time abroad inspired me to learn even more; I picked up phrases and slang in German, French, Italian, and even the Scottish dialect, Doric.

Art, History, and Food: A Journey Through Europe’s Rich Heritage

In my time abroad, I travelled extensively across the UK and Europe. From hiking Scotland’s Highlands and exploring Edinburgh to visiting Rome, Paris, and Lisbon, each adventure was a chance to experience art, history, and food. I saw masterpieces at the Tate Britain Art Gallery in London and The Louvre in Paris, and I was inspired by Gaudi’s architectural designs in Barcelona. Food was another highlight—I savoured local dishes across France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. Every destination added to my understanding of art, history, and culture, helping me build lifelong memories and friendships.

If I Could Do It All Again: I Would!

My semester abroad was life-changing, and if I had the chance, I’d do it all over again. This experience helped me grow in ways I never anticipated and left me with invaluable lessons that I’ll carry forward.
