Culinary Programs Adopt Friendlier Reusable Containers for Sustainable Dining

This Fall, Humber's culinary programs introduced Friendlier reusable containers into their labs, serving student-prepared meals in these eco-friendly containers at Gourmet Express.
About Friendlier:
- Reusable Container Program: Friendlier containers are now available at multiple campus dining locations, offering a sustainable alternative to single-use packaging.
- Deposit and Refund: A $0.50 deposit is added to meals served in Friendlier. To reclaim their deposit, users simply scan the QR code on the container via the Friendlier app and return it to a designated collection bin. Refunds are processed within 1-2 weeks.
- Sustainability:Each container can be reused up to 100 times, supporting Humber’s efforts to reduce single-use plastics and enhance sustainability on campus.
- Impact and Goals: By integrating Friendlier into the culinary programs, students gain hands-on experience with sustainable practices, participating in a circular model of consumption where containers are reused instead of discarded. This hands-on approach supports Humber’s commitment to incorporating sustainability and systems thinking into career readiness across all fields of study.
Since launching the Friendlier program in Fall 2022, Humber has diverted over 340,000 containers from landfills, with the culinary programs expected to contribute to saving an additional 43,000 containers annually. This initiative supports Humber’s commitment to sustainability and aligns with the Federal Government's ban on various single-use plastics.
