By Iren Minka, Humber Styles - Fashion Squad Stylist and Bachelor of Commerce – Fashion Management student
The Humber Styles - Fashion Squad, a team of young and talented fashion students, collaborated with the Salvation Army Thrift Store to emphasize the importance and benefits of shopping second-hand.
With 85% of all textiles discarded each year, fast fashion is not only contributing to landfills at a steady rate, but its production is causing water sources to dry and pollute nearby rivers and streams.
It's important to recognize the positive impact of shopping second-hand. Thrift stores like Salvation Army provide environmentally friendly and stylish opportunities, as proven by the Humber Fashion Squad!
Student stylists Nathalie Gomez, Layla Li, Ekaterina Egupova and Krystyna Kalishevska, along with fashion influencer Iren Minka and Program Co-ordinator Rossie Kadiyska, visited the Salvation Army in Port Credit to create outfits for the winter season.
Fabulous finds coupled with creative and imaginative stylists resulted in chic and fashionable outfits with lots of versatility! The final creations featured different ensembles for parties, coffee dates, shopping, skiing, hanging out with friends, and more.
The outfits were posted on Instagram as photos, reels, and stories and garnered a lot of positive attention. The reel posted as a collaboration between Iren Minka (@h0tc0uture) and the Salvation Army Store (@sathriftstore) attracted more than 19,000 views. Thousands of people also engaged in the four Instagram story polls to vote for the occasion that they would wear each curated look.
Following the success of this collaboration, the Fashion Squad will be able to offer styling services using Salvation Army products and feature more collaborations in 2023.
The Fashion Squad would like to thank the Salvation Army Thrift Store and the Longo Faculty of Business for making this opportunity possible.
