Engaging in a dynamic simulation, International Development students delved into the complexities of responding to a global crisis unfolding in the "Central Humbolan Republic." Divided into groups representing United Nations agencies and non-governmental organizations, students immersed themselves in a three-day exercise, grappling with the urgent needs of refugees, negotiating with 'government' officials, and collaborating to devise solutions to the rapidly evolving refugee crisis.
Drawing upon skills honed throughout their program, including writing funding proposals, budgeting, negotiation, operational planning, and teamwork, students navigated the challenges of the simulation with adeptness and resilience.
On the second day of the exercise, students from the Broadcast Television/Videography program joined the simulation, tasked with finding, capturing and editing stories on the unfolding disaster. This interdisciplinary collaboration provided both groups of students with real-world experience, allowing them to apply their knowledge in a high-pressure environment mirroring real-life scenarios.
In 2024, the simulation welcomed Deputy Minister (DM) Bernie Derible from Emergency Management Ontario and five members of his team. Following his participation as a guest speaker in a class session, the DM, drawing from his prior experience in international disaster response, expressed admiration for the exercise and the students' performance. His visit underscored the parallels between managing disaster responses internationally and domestically in Ontario, emphasizing the importance of effective training and preparation in both contexts.
