This term, postgraduate students in the International Development program gained firsthand insight into the rapidly evolving world of digital strategy, artificial intelligence, and fundraising innovation through a guest speaker session featuring industry leaders and Humber alumni.

Jason Shim, Chief Digital Officer at the Canadian Centre for Nonprofit Digital Resilience and co-author of Bitcoin and the Future of Fundraising, shared his pioneering work introducing cryptocurrency to Canada’s charitable sector as early as 2013. Drawing on his experience with Pathways to Education, Jason illustrated how emerging technologies are reshaping the future of charitable giving.

He was joined by Brock Warner, co-founder of Broccoli, a Humber alumnus, former professor in the Longo Faculty of Business’s Fundraising Management program, and author of From the Ground Up. Together, the two experts explored how AI is transforming nonprofit work, from content creation and audience engagement to ethical use and governance of data and technology. Brock also provided real-world examples and award-winning work from his time with War Child Canada.

The session covered a wide range of topics, including:

  • Leveraging AI tools to amplify a nonprofit’s mission
  • Maintaining authenticity in digital communications
  • Building strong data and AI governance frameworks within nonprofit organizations

Students left the session with practical strategies and a deeper understanding of how to navigate the evolving digital landscape in support of global development goals.
