Fourth-year Bachelor of Paralegal Studies students, Dion Desserre and Maria Rausch, were finalists at the 2024 Western Cup mooting competition, held at Western University’s Faculty of Law on October 5th and 6th. The Western Cup featured eighteen mooting teams from the University of Toronto, Wilfrid Laurier University, and York University. Humber Polytechnic was the only college represented in the competition.

Dion and Maria advanced to the final round after excelling in four preliminary rounds, where they faced a team from the University of Toronto. The final round was presided over by Dr. Christopher Sherrin, Associate Dean (Academic) of Western Law, and centred on the Supreme Court of Canada case R. v. Bradshaw, 2017 SCC 35, which involved the admissibility of a videotaped statement given by the accused during a police investigation utilizing a “Mr. Big Operation.” The Humber team’s impressive oral advocacy skills earned them second place overall in the two-day competition.

Humber was also strongly represented by the team of Grace Haapala and Isabella Cabral, further showcasing the Bachelor of Paralegal Studies students' talent. The teams were expertly coached by Paralegal Studies graduates Paige Diebel, a Litigation Paralegal at Aviva Canada, and Mushfiq Mawla, a Learning Services Assistant at the Faculty of Media, Creative Arts and Design.
