Takiyah Wedderburn, a proud graduate of the Business Management – Entrepreneurial Enterprise program, took a bold step in 2023, stepping away from her role as a Child and Youth Practitioner to turn her passion for creating meaningful change into action. In that year, she not only launched her non-profit, Natural Kids Movement but also founded an innovative social enterprise: NKM Dolls, a company focused on creating dolls with manageable hair.
“Empowering our youth starts with recognizing their unique beauty and potential. Every child deserves to see themselves reflected in the world with pride and confidence,” says Takiyah. Her dolls are designed to promote diversity and inclusion while encouraging understanding and empowerment for both children and caregivers.
Through the Entrepreneurial Enterprise program, Takiyah conducted in-depth research, developed a clear business roadmap, and tested her ideas with the support of her professors and peers. The research has been pivotal in shaping the future of both her non-profit and social enterprise. Currently, she is working on a prototype for her dolls, with plans for a launch in September 2025.
Reflecting on her time at Humber, Takiyah notes, “My experience in Humber's Entrepreneurial Enterprise Business Management program was transformative. It solidified my non-profit, Natural Kids Movement, and my doll business, NKM Dolls. The program provided invaluable opportunities to conduct market research and test my ideas with the support of my colleagues and professors, shaping the future of my ventures.”
Takiyah's impressive initiative has earned her recognition as one of the Top 100 Accomplished Black Canadian Women, a prestigious honour from ABCWomen. She was also featured on Breakfast Television, where she shared the story behind her inspiring journey.
Humber Polytechnic is incredibly proud of Takiyah's achievements, and we look forward to seeing how she continues to inspire and impact her community with her entrepreneurial spirit.
