Mosaic North America Motivates Students at Marketing Spotlight

By Jean Rosenberg

Each year Humber’s Business Marketing department hosts Marketing Spotlight, an event for students in their final semesters of the program. This fall Humber welcomed guest speakers from Mosaic North America, an award-winning marketing agency located in downtown Toronto. The guest speakers, who inspired students with their personal career experiences included Jess Willis, VP Executive Creative Director, Caralia Gosling, Senior Director and Humber Marketing graduate and Vanessa Holmes, Account Director.

Mosaic North America's focus was on Experiential Marketing and showed students that they “believe in making the world a better experience” by doing just that with their motivating presentation. Jess Willis began by showing students and faculty the projects that Mosaic has been involved with most recently through a captivating video presentation. She went on to explain exactly why experience is so powerful when marketing to consumers. Recently people have been moving away from owning things and moving towards experiencing things instead.

A glimpse into various marketing roles within Mosaic and the skills needed to succeed within them were given by Caralia Gosling. She described how agencies can be a great way to learn many different skills when beginning a career in marketing. Caralia used her career as an example having started as a Brand Ambassador at Mosaic 14 years ago while studying as a full-time student in Humber’s Business Marketing program. Through the years she has worked her way up to a current position as Senior Director.

Insightful resume and interview tips were given by Vanessa Holmes who emphasized that submitting a resume online is just not enough to secure an interview. Vanessa suggested following up with the hiring manager or a contact within the company to speak about the position you’ve applied for and to market yourself as an individual.

During the Fireside Chat moderated by James Anderson, a Humber Marketing graduate, students were given additional helpful resume, job search and career advice by the Mosaic team. All three guests agreed that they felt lucky to work for a company with a strong positive work culture - something to look for in a future employer. They also agreed that networking is very important and the best way to do this is by stepping out of your comfort zone to make new connections.

Several other successful Humber Marketing graduates were also in attendance to network with current students and offer career advice following the Fireside Chat. Students at the event agreed that as they finish their final semesters and prepare to enter the workplace, opportunities such as the Marketing Spotlight are invaluable in helping them take the next steps in their marketing careers.
