The 2024 Cengage Computing Experience, held in Charlotte, North Carolina, from October 23-25, gathered educators, program leaders, and professionals dedicated to enhancing computing and digital education. The conference spotlighted emerging trends in AI, digital literacy, real-world curriculum integration, and strategies to meet the evolving needs of today’s learners.
Digital Business Management Professor Hanadi Alnawab, delivered a compelling presentation at the conference, showcasing an international development project to support women entrepreneurs in Kenya.
Through Humber’s International Development Institute (IDI), Professor Hanadi Alnawab led a multidisciplinary team of students in collaboration with the CAP Youth Empowerment Institute (CAPYEI), a Kenyan NGO. Together, they developed a digital curriculum to teach web development to female refugee entrepreneurs. The program included branding, blogging, SEO, and social media training, equipping participants with the skills to build an online presence and expand their businesses globally.
The curriculum incorporated a fictional case study, “Kitenge Fashion,” to ensure cultural relevance and inclusivity while addressing challenges such as language and technology barriers. To sustain the initiative, the team conducted virtual Training of Trainers (ToT) sessions with CAPYEI, emphasizing adaptability and cultural sensitivity as essential components of international development.
Professor Hanadi Alnawab's presentation highlighted how digital education initiatives can empower underserved communities, foster global connections, and demonstrate the transformative potential of technology in addressing real-world challenges.
