HLOs:
For Business Management student Diego Buenano, studying abroad was more than a trip—it was a life-changing experience that broadened his perspective on business, culture, and the future of innovation.
Originally from Ecuador, Diego moved to Canada in 2023 to continue his education and pursue new opportunities. With experience in marketing, design, and restaurant leadership, Diego came to Humber with an entrepreneurial spirit and a long-term goal of starting his own business. “I’ve always been passionate about business and creativity,” he shares. “Humber’s Business Management program felt like the right step to strengthen my knowledge, connect with diverse people, and push myself toward my future goals.”
That drive led him to participate in a four-week study abroad program at CBS International Business School in Cologne, Germany, where he took part in the Fundamentals of Smart Cities course. “I wanted to challenge myself and step out of my comfort zone,” Diego explains. “Living and studying abroad gave me the chance to see how business is approached in Europe, learn about sustainability and innovation, and build connections with people from around the world.”
Each day brought a mix of learning and exploration. Mornings were spent in the classroom, diving into discussions about smart solutions for modern cities, while afternoons allowed time to explore Cologne’s culture, museums, and even nearby countries. One highlight for Diego was visiting a UPS facility at the airport, where classroom concepts came to life in a real-world setting.
Of course, there were challenges. “The main challenge was the language and adapting to cultural differences,” Diego recalls. “I overcame them by staying open-minded, learning basic German phrases, and leaning on the friendships I built with other international students. We helped each other adapt quickly.”
From this experience, Diego walked away with a deeper understanding of sustainability, innovation, and global collaboration, as well as stronger cross-cultural communication skills. “It showed me that business isn’t just local anymore—it’s global by nature,” he says. “On a personal level, it reminded me that growth happens when you take risks and embrace the unknown.”
Diego encourages fellow Humber students to take full advantage of the opportunities the Business Management program provides—both inside and outside the classroom. “The program isn’t just about theory—it’s about applying ideas, networking, and discovering your strengths. And if you’re thinking about studying abroad? Do it! You’ll come back with fresh ideas, lifelong friendships, and experiences that set you apart in your career.”
Looking ahead, Diego plans to connect his study abroad insights with his future ambitions. “I want to apply what I learned about European innovation and culture to entrepreneurship and business projects here in Canada. My goal is to bring a global mindset into everything I do.”
Diego’s journey is a shining example of how Humber Polytechnic’s Business Management program and its study abroad opportunities empower students to grow as professionals and global citizens—preparing them for success in an interconnected world.
