By Rachel Paiva, Fashion Arts and Business student
Our field placement course - FASH-252 in the Fashion Arts and Business program provided us with the unique opportunity to create and install a window display in the Humber Boutique at the North Campus.
The display was designed to evoke a sense of romance and celebration during the Valentine’s season this February. Working closely with Professor Kim Rich, who provided creative direction, we applied our design strengths, and prior course knowledge to turn this concept into a cohesive, impactful display.
The visual concept centered on a monochromatic red palette with bold statement pieces. We used layered textures, including lace, high shine finishes, faux fur, and feathers to add depth and visual interest. To tie the theme together, we included supporting props such as rose petals sprinkled across the risers and roses positioned as a “gift” gesture to add a sense of whimsy.
Execution needed careful consideration of styling, as well as proportion. We made ongoing adjustments to the composition, including repositioning mannequins, perfecting outfits and accessory placements across the three looks to improve balance and strengthen the focal point. The final result is a bright, dramatic window that attracts the attention of students and alumni and sets a welcoming, Valentine’s tone for the boutique.
Overall, this project strengthened our collaboration, communication, and creative problem-solving skills while providing hands-on insight into the complete visual merchandising process, from concept development through final installation.
