In the Summer 2024 term, an interdisciplinary team of students from the Fashion Management and Interactive Media Management programs teamed up to develop a virtual fashion exhibit prototype, supported by the Longo Centre for Entrepreneurship and Experience Ventures. The project aimed to digitally preserve and enhance the Humber Designs with Japanese Paper Place exhibit, which originally debuted in Fall 2023 and featured thirteen intricate paper garments. Noticing sun damage to the delicate pieces, students reimagined the exhibit using Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies.

Guided by faculty from the Longo Faculty of Business and the Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology, the students created an immersive digital experience using tools like Bezi and MyLensStudio. The virtual exhibition allowed viewers to interact with the garments in a storytelling-rich environment, showcasing the potential of AR/VR in preserving art beyond physical limitations. Despite technical challenges, the project laid the groundwork for future explorations in fashion, interior design, and event planning.

In September, the students presented their prototype to the leadership team of the The Japanese Paper Place. Paula Huisman, the company’s Business Development Manager, praised the innovative use of AR/VR, highlighting new possibilities for integrating these technologies into their business. What began as a classroom project evolved into a real-world opportunity, demonstrating the potential for future collaborations between Humber and industry partners.

Special thanks were extended to John Lam and Sarah White from the Longo CfE for their contributions to the project’s success.
