Program Overview

Humber’s Bachelor of Commerce – Finance degree program offers comprehensive knowledge of both business and finance. Our program starts with a foundation of business studies in areas such as organizational behaviour, law, economics, finance, accounting, marketing and operations management. Specialization courses focus on theories, methods and techniques in various aspects of finance including analysis, planning and risk management.

Our project-based curriculum, designed by industry experts, helps you develop the skills to move from idea to execution, all while learning core business concepts and financial strategies. A senior-level project in your final year will give you experience in problem solving, evaluating strengths and limitations, and making appropriate decisions in a real-world, team-based environment.

Work-Integrated Learning  

The program requires that you complete 14 weeks/420 hours of a paid in the summer between your sixth and seventh semesters. This gives you the hands-on, real-world experience that employers value. Your field experience will give you the opportunity to explore the field you’d like to work in when you graduate. We will work with employers and our industry partners to help you identify opportunities to pursue.

Student Experience

The first two years of the BCom Finance Degree program are focused on developing general business management skills. In the final two years, students take specialized finance courses which prepares them for careers in the finance industry. Successful completion of the program also prepares students to write exams required for key designations/credentials in the finance industry, including:

  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Level 1
  • Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Qualified Associate Financial Planner (QAFP)
  • Canadian Securities 1 and 2

In the 4th year capstone course, students are placed in groups to work with a Toronto-based Financial Advisor who acts as their "client" in order to develop client-ready skills and gain experience developing suitable investment and other financial planning recommendations.

Trading Floor

Situated at Lakeshore Campus, this working lab allows students to simulate real-life trading of stocks, bonds, funds, and currencies. The lab is equipped with Bloomberg® terminals which enable students to analyze and track investments and market data. Students who are interested can take the learning modules required to receive a Bloomberg Market Concepts (BMC) certification indicating to potential employers that they are able to use the Bloomberg terminal. The trading floor adds an experiential learning element and allows students to experience what it’s like to be a trader and portfolio manager.

Longo Faculty of Business offers a variety of Bachelor of Commerce degree programs on a common platform within a variety of specializations. Students have the flexibility to change their specialization within the first two years of study. This gives students the time to decide on their career path while they are gaining insight into the fundamentals of business.

Humber Degree Scholarships

Humber awards degree scholarships automatically to graduating high school students based on academic achievement. See this following chart for details. Some of the scholarships are renewable each year if you maintain an average of 80 per cent or more.

95%+ $4,000 renewable
90 - 94.9% $3,500 renewable
85 - 89.9% $3,000 renewable
80 - 84.9% $2,000 renewable
75 - 79.9%  $1,500 one time

Diploma to Degree Transfer Student Scholarship

Humber awards degree scholarships automatically to students entering any Humber degree program who have completed a two or three-year diploma from a publicly-funded college. Students who have achieved a program GPA of 80% or better will be awarded a one-time scholarship of $2,500 in recognition of their academic achievement at the diploma level. Diplomas do not have to be related to the degree program of choice and are not tied to the eligibility for advanced standing or transfer credit. No application is required.

The program is recognized by the CFA Institute as an Affiliated University Program meeting the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge curriculum requirements.

Chartered Institute of Financial Planning (CIFP)

The program is recognized by CIFP as an Approved Curriculum Provider meeting the educational requirements for the Chartered Financial Planner certification and the Registered Retirement Consultant (RRC) certification.

FP Canada

The program is recognized by FP Canada as an Approved Core and Advanced Curriculum Provider meeting the educational requirements on the path to Qualified Associate Financial Planner (QAFP) or Certified Financial Planner (CFP) certification.

How To Become An Apprentice

Becoming an Apprentice

Find an employer willing to sponsor you as an apprentice.

Admission Requirements

Admission selection is based on the academic criteria indicated. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission.

Admission selection is based on the following three requirements:

  • Academic

    To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

    • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
      • Grade 12 English (ENG4U or equivalent) minimum 65 per cent
      • Grade 12 Mathematics (MDM4U, MCB4U, MGA4U, MCV4U or MHF4U or equivalent) minimum 60 per cent (Students who do not possess Grade 12U Mathematics or who have achieved a grade below 60 per cent may be considered for admission.  Students will be required to complete a math equivalency course during their first semester at Humber.)
      • Four Grade 12 U or M courses in addition to those listed above
      • Overall minimum grade point average (GPA) 65 per cent

    Mature Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet all listed course requirements.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

    College Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

    University Transfer Applicants

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

  • English Language Proficiency

    All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

  • International Credit Evaluation

    Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a credential evaluation. Note, for international High school education course by course evaluations, ICAS must be used. For international post-secondary education, a WES evaluation must be provided. In situations where you expect to apply for transfer credit, it is recommended that a course by course WES evaluation is completed.

Scholarships

Humber Degree Scholarships

Humber awards degree scholarships automatically to graduating high school students based on academic achievement. See this following chart for details. Some of the scholarships are renewable each year if you maintain an average of 80 per cent or more.

95%+ $4,000 renewable
90 - 94.9% $3,500 renewable
85 - 89.9% $3,000 renewable
80 - 84.9% $2,000 renewable
75 - 79.9% $1,500 one time

Degree Transfer Scholarships ($1,500 - $2,500)

Humber automatically awards degree transfer scholarships to students entering any Humber degree program who have completed a one-year Ontario college certificate* or a two- or three-year diploma with a GPA of 80 per cent or more from a publicly-funded college. Students who have achieved a program GPA of 80 per cent or more will be awarded a one-time scholarship of $1,500 for a certificate program or $2,500 for a diploma program in recognition of their academic achievement. Certificates and diplomas do not have to be related to the degree program of choice and are not tied to the eligibility for advanced standing or transfer credit. No application is required
