HLOs:
Hospitality - Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management students wrapped up their winter semester with an immersive, real-world consulting project, applying their knowledge and skills to support an international hospitality client.
Working under the guidance of Professor Anke Föller-Carroll, students were tasked with developing actionable solutions for Hotel Jiquilillo Beach, a beachfront property in Nicaragua owned by Gerry Carceres. The project was coordinated in partnership with Mary Lendway, a former Humber professor and active tourism advocate for the region.
The challenge: to create strategies that would help the hotel improve staff retention, strengthen its online marketing presence, and increase visitor traffic. Divided into small groups, students conducted comprehensive research on both the local tourism landscape and the operational needs of the hotel. Their deliverables included environmental scans, business model development, and strategic proposals designed for both short- and long-term impact.
The semester culminated in a competitive pitch presentation, where each group presented their findings and recommendations directly to the clients. After careful consideration, the winning team was announced: Shercile De-Coteau, Harry Nhat Nguyen Ly, Hoang Bao Han Tran, Gurjot Singh, and Avery Dimaria.
The top team was awarded a complimentary stay with breakfast at Hotel Jiquilillo Beach, while all runners-up received an offer for a 50% discount on accommodations this year.
Sincere thanks to Gerry Carceres and Mary Lendway for providing such a valuable learning opportunity and for their generous support towards the students.
