On November 15, Bachelor of Commerce – Fashion Management student Alexander Nicholson, made a debut at Toronto Fashion Week (TOFW) with his show titled "Everything Next to Nothing". Hosted by the Fashion Club, Rchive, for their second year running, the event featured a mix of high fashion, set against the backdrop of hovering aircraft and a unique dystopian atmosphere at the Billy Bishop Airport hangar.

Alex's collection demonstrated his expert tailoring, imaginative silhouettes, and creative genius. Notable designs included Look 8, where denim was fused with recovered Indian newspapers that Alex gathered while working as a forklifter during the summer months, and Look 2, which transformed a hoodie into an architectural piece resembling armour. Militarism was evident in many of his looks. The show was a blend of boldness and intricacy, with standout pieces like a long trench coat with a marten-lined collar made from Emergency Health Services wool blankets located near Humber's Lakeshore campus.

Despite drawing inspiration from his small-town roots in Caledon, Ontario, Alex's designs are anything but ordinary. His play with silhouettes, garment construction and proportions demonstrates a keen eye for innovation, experimentation and above all else immense creativity.

Alex's collection explored the emotional contrasts inherent in his creative journey, embodied through both the design of the pieces and the atmosphere of the show. The runway presentation was an immersive experience that juxtaposed dystopian electric sounds and a surreal setting with beautiful, utopian fashion creations. Models walked in striking designs that reflected an imaginative narrative, drawing the audience into a world reminiscent of Blade Runner. The show’s dramatic conclusion saw Alex accompanied by a towering white figure, Mr. Whisper, a visual representation of his creative vision, leaving the audience with a sense of euphoria and anticipation for the future.

It's incredible to think that Alex, a self-taught designer, patternmaker, and tailor, has achieved such success through his own ingenuity. While studying at Humber, he refined his entrepreneurial skills, laying the foundation for his brand. As he continues to develop his unique voice in the fashion world, Alex's work is one to watch closely as it establishes itself as a noteworthy Canadian brand.
