To enhance online engagement in the Esthetician/Spa Management program, Professor Stephanie Prestidge along with Senior Lab Technician, Jessica Ellison and Spa Assistants, Amber Pastor, and Monica Grasmann, created weekly challenges for students to practice their technical skills.
The team developed videos to recap previous learning and demonstrate techniques students would otherwise be learning in a practical lab for the course BSPA 150: Nail Care Technologies. Last week, students submitted an image of a completed French manicure. This week, after watching a tutorial called "Spring In Bloom" created by Jessica Ellison in which she applied nail art to her fingers, on one hand, using various household items, students were required to submit a photo of the look for critical discourse marks in the course.
By developing smaller activities, students received more practice before their final assessment in which they will submit an unlisted YouTube video to their lab technician on Blackboard of a spa manicure and pedicure for a final mark.
The Esthetician/Spa Management team plan on continuing to create smaller activities in this course to allow students to build their practical skill to a professional spa industry level beyond the classroom.
