Tell us about yourself and your background.
My name is Sheila Moore. I am a professor at Humber College. I have been teaching marketing courses to students in Canada for about 10 years now. Prior to this, I worked in various sales and marketing positions for a few different organizations.
Tell us about the course you taught and the Ametros experience you used?
I teach Professional Selling which is an introductory course designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the selling profession and its importance within the marketing environment. Students typically have three assignments in this course and I have replaced one of them with the Ametros Intro to Sales simulation which plays a major role in preparing them to be better salespeople by providing hands-on experience.
Most of the time, the concept of B2B sales is quite foreign to many students and the Ametros experience is a really good opportunity for them to actually comprehend the situation from the perspective of the salesperson in a very safe environment, where it's just them and the artificial intelligence.
Did you receive any feedback from your students that you are able to share with us?
I have used the Ametros simulation for several semesters now, and the students love it because it's very different from the traditional assignments and at the same time it’s interactive, fun, and interesting. The ability to receive immediate responses from the AI is greatly appreciated by the students. A variety of skills like communication, critical thinking, and empathy, are put to test before responding to the AI character which is a great opportunity for the students to practice and develop these skills. The experience has been working out really well for my course, with the majority of students finishing it on time. Also, the platform’s support services are great as the Ametros team has always been responsive to our requests to update the experience to meet the evolving curriculum needs.
What teaching tips would you share with other instructors?
Experience the simulation yourself before introducing it to the students because it will be easier for the students to understand when you describe the simulation in the context of the experience. The other thing that I do is to start the simulation in the class and have the students watch the introductory video with me. I find it very beneficial because they sign up for the experience right away and get started. Additionally, I download the dossiers, discuss the key information with the students and guide them in interpreting the data. This is helpful because not every student would have had the opportunity to conduct an analytical analysis and doing so gives them some direction.
