A Spark Ignited: From Engineering to Analytics

In 2017, a seemingly ordinary seminar on data analytics at Larsen & Toubro (L&T) sparked a lifelong passion in Pravin Anguraja. Inspired by the speaker’s vision of using data to drive organizational change, Pravin began his career as a Graduate Engineering Trainee at L&T. There, he witnessed firsthand the power of data in addressing complex business challenges.

As he progressed to Assistant Manager, Pravin deepened his expertise in project management and data analysis. Yet, he yearned for a broader perspective—one that fused technical knowledge with storytelling, innovation, and strategy. This desire set the stage for a pivotal transition.

In 2022, he made a bold move—enrolling in the Business Insights and Analytics (BIA) program at Humber Polytechnic. What followed was a transformative academic experience that redefined his professional path.

How Humber Transformed Pravin’s Analytics Journey

The BIA program provided Pravin with a strategic framework for approaching data—not just as a tool, but as a driver of decision-making. From Power BI to communication and critical thinking, every course element enriched his ability to solve real-world problems.

During his first semester, Pravin became a Student Ambassador at Humber Downtown, collaborating with the Industry and Connector Hub. His work developing Power BI reports optimized internal workflows and empowered teams to track performance metrics efficiently—translating classroom knowledge into organizational impact.

Outside the classroom, Pravin led analytics workshops, organized programming events, and participated in marketing campaigns—actively supporting the International Graduate School (IGS) community. These experiences strengthened not just his technical skills, but his leadership and collaborative mindset.

The program taught him more than just tools; it instilled in him a data-first approach to problem-solving and fostered a culture of continuous learning and teamwork.

Leading with Data and Purpose

A defining moment came during a Humber networking event, where Pravin connected with a supervisor from the City of Richmond Hill. Their shared passion for data visualization, governance, and performance reporting led to a role in the Data and Analytics team. There, Pravin contributed to impactful projects that advanced digital transformation and improved data quality and performance measurement.

Pravin continues to apply the skills developed at Humber—leading a biweekly Power BI Community of Practice, mentoring peers, and promoting a collaborative culture in public service analytics.

Reflecting on his journey, Pravin credits the BIA program for instilling not only technical fluency but also a growth mindset, resilience, and curiosity—traits essential for thriving in the fast-evolving world of data.
