Michael Plumb, a third-year student in the Professional Golf Management – Business Administration program, has combined his extensive industry experience with an entrepreneurial vision to launch RainCheck Golf, a premium, 24/7 indoor golf simulator facility in Alliston, Ontario.

Michael, a resident of New Tecumseth, has been passionate about golf for years and has worked in the industry for over five years at The Club at Bond Head, where he is also completing his program co-op. In 2022, after visiting an indoor golf facility to keep his skills sharp over the winter, he recognized a local need for year-round golf options. Inspired by his winter frustrations as a golfer, Michael and his business partner, Jerry, took on the challenge of building an automated, self-serve indoor golf experience that would serve both him and the local community. RainCheck Golf opened in January 2023 and is set to celebrate its third year of operations next January.

RainCheck Golf offers four simulator rooms equipped with high-quality technology, allowing golfers to choose from over 1,100+ worldwide and local courses, including prestigious championship venues. In addition to courses, the simulators provide driving range options, skill challenges, and a suite of game-improvement features. The facility also partners with professional coaches who help players at all skill levels develop their game.

During the facility’s setup, Michael’s education at Humber was a valuable resource. The Professional Golf Management program’s mix of practical and business-oriented courses—covering entrepreneurship, marketing, sales, finance, and more—has provided him with critical skills he uses daily. Humber’s Golf Lab, in particular, played a significant role in RainCheck’s development. Michael experimented with industry-standard equipment like Trackman and Foresight launch monitors, which helped him decide on the best technology for his facility and informed the design of RainCheck’s simulator rooms.

The mentorship and support from professors with industry experience were invaluable, as they guided Michael on specific industry questions and strategies. Through his program, Michael has built connections within both the golf industry and the business community, further enhancing his career path.

Michael’s journey demonstrates how Humber’s Professional Golf Management program fosters both expertise and entrepreneurship, equipping students with the skills and confidence to launch meaningful ventures. RainCheck Golf is a testament to Michael’s drive and to the program’s effectiveness in nurturing future leaders in the golf industry.
