Humber Polytechnic's Bachelor of Paralegal Studies program achieved a landmark victory at the 2024 Capital Cup National Mooting Competition, hosted by Carleton University in Ottawa this November. The team of Dion Desserre and Maria Rausch Lima clinched first place, marking Humber’s inaugural win in a national mooting event.

Competing against 29 teams from six prominent institutions, including McGill, Memorial, Concordia, University of Ottawa, Carleton, and York, Humber stood out as the only polytechnic institution in the competition. The triumph underscores the calibre of Humber’s paralegal program and its students' exceptional advocacy skills.

Humber’s second team, composed of Grace Haapala and Kiran Matharu, also delivered an outstanding performance, advancing to the quarterfinals and securing an impressive fourth place overall after four rounds.

This historic achievement was made possible through the guidance of alumni coaches Paige Diebel, a Litigation Paralegal with Aviva Insurance, and Mushfiq Mawla, a Learning Services Assistant in Humber’s Faculty of Media and Creative Arts. Their mentorship played a pivotal role in preparing the students for success.

The win not only highlights the strength of Humber’s legal education but also positions the institution as a formidable contender in national competitions traditionally dominated by universities.
