HLOs:
The Longo Faculty of Business celebrated the virtual launch of the 2023 edition of the Paralegal Access to Justice Journal, published by Emond Canada. The event, marking the first virtual launch of this longstanding publication, drew over fifty attendees, including academics, lawyers, paralegals, and community members.
The 2023 edition of the Journal features articles focused on the practice of paralegals to advance access to justice for the most vulnerable communities through their legal work in Ontario and beyond. Professor Jasteena Dhillon, Co-Chief Editor, Humber Law Faculty member, International Lawyer, and recipient of Windsor Law's Access to Justice Award, facilitated the event. Professor Jasteena showcased the dedicated paralegal student writers who are committed to ensuring justice for the most marginalized groups in Canada.
During the event, six Bachelor of Paralegal Studies program graduates delivered oral readings of their articles, which critically examined barriers to justice for vulnerable communities. Topics included migrants in detention, provincial offences backlog and a triage system, family law tribunals staffed by paralegals, the bias of artificial intelligence towards racialized communities, and the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women.
Longo Faculty of Business Senior Dean Alvina Cassiani, Associate Dean James Cullin, as well as Bachelor of Paralegal Studies Program Co-ordinator and Co-Chief Editor, Bernard Aron, provided introductions, institutional context and historical background of paralegal studies at Humber.
