REC Students Impress Guests with Their Business Pitches
Thu, March 14, 2019
Having a good business idea is just the first step in starting a successful business.
Our Recreation and Leisure students know first-hand the steps involved; having created unique business ideas of their own as a part of their Entrepreneurship class. On March 5th, we held an Entrepreneurship Tradeshow here at Humber College. At the event, our students had the opportunity to pitch their business ideas to faculty and staff members of the Humber Community as well as guests that work within the industry.
When planning a business, it is important that those behind the business fully understand all the logistics involved, and are able to communicate them effectively to potential investors. Many logistics needs to be considered in the planning process such as establishing the target markets, conducting a SWOT analysis and planning the finances. During the Sales Concept Fair, our students were able to demonstrate their knowledge by pitching their business to the guests in attendance. The guests were also encouraged to challenge the students by asking questions regarding their business plans that may not have been answered during the original pitch. This allowed our students to exercise speaking in front of unfamiliar faces and encouraged them to be prepared for any question a potential investor may have. The students have many great business ideas, and several students plan to bring their vision to life in the near future.
Many thanks to the industry guests and Humber community who took time out of their busy day in order to attend our Entrepreneurship Tradeshow. Your presence made all the difference!
Humber’s Advanced Chocolate and Confectionery Students Melt Hearts with Their Hand-Crafted Confections
Fri, March 01, 2019
February 14th at Humber College didn’t have a dull moment.
From rose sales in Gourmet Express to cookie decorating in the Learning Resource Centre, there was something for everyone. This past Valentine’s Day, the Advanced Chocolate and Confectionary students had something special to offer the Humber community: handcrafted chocolate bonbons. As a part of their Bakery Entrepreneurship and Innovation class, students were tasked with creating a chocolate bonbon that would be judged by the Baking and Pastry Arts Management faculty members and sold in a box of confections.
In addition to creating the chocolates, the students also had to order the boxes, purchase the ingredients, and assemble the boxes with its logo and packaging by hand. These aspects were taken into consideration when pricing the boxes, to ensure they were able to make a profit from their sales.
One hundred boxes were sold during the pre-sales. Due to high demand, an extra 50 boxes were made with the remaining chocolates. There were 151 boxes sold in total, including the box that was on display.
Congratulations to all the students and faculty involved in making this business adventure a success.

This opportunity could place our students at The Dorchester or 45 Park Lane – both Luxury Hotel properties a part of the Dorchester Collection.
This is a paid position with a two-year commitment and the chance to rotate between departments every six months or so, giving those working in baking a chance to work in culinary and vice versa. The 45 Park Lane property is a five-star hotel with a dedicated pastry department – making this location coveted amongst the pastry chefs. Selected students would receive the Tier 5 Youth Mobility Visa which would provide a two-year work permit in order to work at their hotel. Eligible students must possess a Canadian passport and be between the ages of 18 and 30 years old.
The Dorchester is aiming to build a partnership with schools in Canada to develop a regular program for recruiting students. We hope to see one of our students selected for this outstanding career building opportunity and anticipate future opportunities such as this as well.

Culinary Students Get a Real Veal Experience
Tue, December 04, 2018
Veal is beef but the distinction is that it is sourced from calves instead of mature cattle.
Like every other kind of meat, there are multiple ways it can be prepared. Chef Stefan Czapalay and Chef David Song visited our culinary class here at Humber North to educate our students on all the various ways you can cook veal. They performed a demonstration right in front of our students and discussed what other food pairs well with it. After the demonstration, we had the opportunity to taste veal carpaccio, veal and risotto and more.
In addition, a local farmer came in to discuss the process in which they raise their calves, and how they are grain fed.
The winner of the veal competition held earlier this semester was also announced this evening. Congratulations to Samantha Simms, on receiving first place for her pimento smoked jerked veal sandwich. Samantha will be showcasing her talents at the Restaurant and Bar show in late February 2019.
Hospitality Industry Networking Event
Mon, December 03, 2018
Having a well-established network has become an important part of any career.
The purpose of networking is to build relationships with other professionals in your field in order to share and retain knowledge, expand your connections and potentially open doors for future opportunities for yourself. On November 22nd, students enrolled in the Hospitality programs had the chance to participate in a networking event here at Humber North with several industry professionals.
The two-hour event consisted of a “speed dating” format allowing for four 10 minute networking sessions with the professional of their choice, with a three-minute window in between. The last hour consisted of an open networking session with snacks and refreshments, allowing students and guests to mix and mingle. The industry professionals in attendance varied from those in the event sector, general managers, association representatives as well as various hotel and food and beverage positions. This wide variety of professionals allowed for students to network with whomever they believed would be most beneficial for them based on their area of interest.
Thank you to all the industry guests who came out to network with our students, and to all the students who participated in this great opportunity.
