Business School Professor Nabeel Mandahawi's recent research paper has been published in the International Journal of Health Care Quality Assurance. This journal is one of the Emerald Insight journal papers. Emerald is a global publisher, linking research and practice to the benefit of society which manages more than 290 journals and over 2,350 books and book series volumes.
The purpose of the paper is to present the deficiencies in teamwork skills at hospitals by identifying the training needs to improve teamwork-related soft skills of caregivers to enhance staff satisfaction and improve quality of care. A self-administrated questionnaire was designed to study the deficiencies in teamwork and team leadership. The survey has been distributed to physicians, nursing and anesthesiologists operating in emergency departments, surgical operating rooms and intensive care units from various hospitals. Around 410 questionnaires were distributed, and a total of 323 questionnaires were completed for an overall response rate of 78.8%. The study showed that lack of teamwork skills resulted directly or indirectly in medical errors, and it played a major role in their job dissatisfaction in working under their team leaders and/or with teammates.
