On Wednesday March 29th, PAC (Program Advisory Committee) member Peter Chauvin, Managing Director of BMO Capital Markets presented to Humber's Finance students.
Peter has been an active PAC member since 2010. He provided students with the opportunity to network and learn more about the career opportunities in the financial sector. Students were also given the opportunity to ask pertinent questions that enable them to practice and improve their communication skills.
Humber is always exploring new ways to partner with industry experts to identify new learning experiences for students.
The objective was to have students learn first hand why bonds are issued, the risks and returns associated with bonds, and the role of bankers and other individuals play when raising capital through debt instruments. Peter Chauvin, in addition to expanding on the concepts the students learned throughout the semester, supplied a live example, sharing a current client deal he is involved with in raising over $3 billion in debt issuance for an international insurance company.
In addition, this event provided a networking opportunity for students as well as the capability to interact with a “Street” aka Bay Street financier who was easy to speak with.
Having another professional teach a section of the class was a welcome infusion for students. It offers a different viewpoint and reinforces the message that these are not just financial concepts but real products and services in the financial industry. Speakers like Peter Chauvin add contextual and experiential learning capabilities for students.
Peter Chauvin was able to share his vast knowledge with students about what he does and how it relates to the course curriculum. He presented in the Hives Room, a state-of-art non-traditional classroom with multiple screens, interactive and collaborative tools.
Students were engaged throughout the presentation and asked several questions.
"It was very interesting and inspiring to meet someone that is a proven expert in an industry that I am currently studying." - Jashandeep, Finance student
