Yale has acknowledged something that Humber knew two years ago — Supreme Court Justice Rosalie Abella is an extraordinary Canadian.
Yale Law School awarded Justice Abella an honorary degree, making her the first woman in the Ivy League school’s 315 year history to receive the distinction. She joins William Lyon Mackenzie King, Vincent Massey and Lester B. Pearson as the only Canadians honoured by the school.
"You defend human-rights and justice in your home nation of Canada and around the globe,” Yale president Peter Salovey said in the citation. “As one of the world’s finest living judges, you approach your work with zest, empathy and superb intelligence.”
The recognition comes two years after Justice Abella, 69, received an honorary degree from Humber — the only honorary degree she has received in Toronto, her hometown, she observed — for her tireless work in human rights.
Humber congratulates Justice Abella on her recognition from Yale and is proud to have honoured her in Canada.
