Entrepreneurship is relevant all across the college, as highlighted by a recent cross-collaboration between The Business School, the School of Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism and the Centre for Entrepreneurship.
On March 28, Suzanne Ross did a guest appearance in Lucia Weiler’s NUTR 262: Entrepreneurship class, a fourth-semester course in the Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle diploma program at the North Campus. Due to a conflict with Suzanne’s class at the Lakeshore, the two profs utilized a “virtual time machine” and connected via Zoom video tele-conferencing. Suzanne was projected onto the screen in class and students were able to ask questions and hear advice in real time.
Lucia is a consulting dietitian and business owner herself. She introduces students to various aspects of entrepreneurship through guest speakers. Earlier in the term, Raeshelle Morris, the Manager of Humber’s Centre for Entrepreneurship, had also spoken to the HRT class. She suggested that Suzanne Ross, who is a Mentor with the CFE and has considerable experience training and advising new business start-ups, would also be a valuable guest. Many of her previous clients were chefs, yoga instructors, massage therapists and esthetic salon owners - all Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle Promotion oriented.
Suzanne was quick to accept the invitation. “I’m so glad to see that Entrepreneurship is being taught across Humber’s various faculties. So many people think that The Business School is the only place for it, and that’s just not the case. Anyone who hopes to take their skills out into the marketplace needs to learn the essentials of business start-up and management.”
Students expressed appreciation for the insights, resources and encouraging stories presented to assist in their career development. In keeping with Humber’s strategic plan, this was really an effective collaboration between faculties, using advanced technology to overcome logistical challenges.
