Farah Jamal Karmali, a Law Clerk/Paralegal Professor at the Business School, has been appointed as a Deputy Judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice (Small Claims) in November 2017. Small Claims Court is the busiest court of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Deputy Judges preside over civil cases up to a monetary limit of $25,000 (expected to increase to $50,000). As a Deputy Judge, Farah adjudicates claims argued by lawyers, paralegals and self-represented individuals - so there are unique challenges and opportunities to administering justice for the litigants.
Furthermore, Farah's book, Corporate Law for Ontario Businesses, 2nd Ed. (Thomson Reuters, 2017) has been adopted as the official text to teach Corporate Law for the Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario (ILCO). ILCO is the professional organization representing law clerks; it also provides them with opportunities to upgrade their education, after they have received a law clerk diploma. Farah was asked to rewrite ILCO's corporate law curriculum, because of her expertise in this area. Her textbook is now in the law libraries of at least two law schools - Osgoode Hall Law School, and the Faculty of Law at Queens.
