At the annual conference for the Society of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) held in Winnipeg, MB June 11 to 14 I had the privilege of representing the Faculty of Business.

The purpose of the Innovation of the Year Awards is to recognize college employees who have designed and implemented significant innovations that positively impact the education of students at Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning.

Congratulations to Francis Derick Flores the Worldchefs Challenge Gold winner from Canada, who will go on to represent the Americas in Russia 2020 at the Worldchefs Congress. The competition was hosted at Humber and four lucky Humber Culinary students were chosen to support the competition and network with Worldchefs Level A judges.

This summer 25 Fashion Arts and Business diploma students are completing their Field Placements abroad in Florence in partnership with FUA (Florence University of the Arts). The fashion business students are managing a boutique in the heart of Florence, FLY – Fashion Loves You.

This years Showcase “Shift” was a successful professional development day and thank you to everyone from the Faculty of Business for their workshops and support. The Showcase Committee were pleased to announce that Ramesh Srinivasan was this years People’s Choice award winner for his workshop ‘Can I get a decent wine for under $10 dollars, Really?’ Congratulations Ramesh!  

Nabeel Mandahawi, a professor of Supply Chain Management, along with his co-authors Mariam Bader, Omar Al-Araidah, and Al Theeb, published a book titled “A Study of Deficiencies in Teamwork Skills among Healthcare Caregivers using Total Quality Management”, published in April by LAP LAMBERT Academic.

At the end of March, The Culinary Federation Toronto branch chefs’ association hosted Humber’s first Humberlicious fundraising event. The dinner and networking event was hosted in the Humber Room at the North campus and inspired a fun and interactive atmosphere for staff and professors, chefs, high school culinary teachers and students.

Professor Jasteena Dhillon hosts a Fireside Chat with Eileen Olexiuk. Ms. Olexiuk was the first Global Affairs Canadian diplomat to be posted to Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001

This past April, MaryJo Tullo, a Bachelor of Commerce, Marketing student, was awarded 2nd Place Finalist at DECA's International Career Development Conference in Marketing Management, the most competitive and largest category.

Second-year Digital Business Management degree students recently completed work with two small businesses in Ontario as part of their BUS 2504 Web Development's experiential learning course.

On April 27, three Humber teams participated in the first International Guelph-Humber Mooting Competition. The three team members included Paralegal Degree students Danny Pallag, Breanne Peacock and Mushfiq Mawla

HHRS executives of the Human Resources Management Graduate Certificate Program, Zoë Allen (President), Rabita Naqvi( Vice President), Salma Sahebzada (Secretary), Shriya Tandon and Katelin McKnight (Class Representatives) organized an extremely successful Alumni Speed Networking Event.

Grads Give Back is an annual event held by the two-year Business Marketing diploma at Humber College. It welcomes graduates who are working in various careers to speak to final semester students about their paths from Humber and to provide insights, tips, and advice.

Rossie Kadiyska, Professor and Program Coordinator of the Fashion Management Graduate Certificate, visited the Copenhagen Institute of Design and Technology (KEA) to participate in a knowledge exchange and build collaborative opportunities.

Meeting Professionals International (MPI) held their annual Global Meetings Industry Day on Thursday April 4. The Toronto Chapter held a symposium at The Old Mill. Colin Bartley, Event Management Program Coordinator, participated in a panel discussion and some students also attended the event.

On Saturday, April 27, students from the Faculty of Business gathered at the Lakeshore campus for the very first Ontario Colleges’ Marketing Competition (OCMC) boot camp. The event was generously organized by Humber’s marketing professors to allow 27 of the top students to network, meet the OCMC coaches and test their marketing skills.

On April 12, 2019, Paralegal Degree students held the Second Annual Aboriginal Moot at the Lakeshore Campus. The Aboriginal Moot was the capstone assignment for students in the Indigenous Legal Perspectives course.

On April 17th, Professor Jasteena Dhillon delivered the Keynote Speech at the United Nations Association of Toronto (UNACTO) Annual General Meeting at Toronto City Hall, where she spoke on rule of law and justice work in the field.

On March 14th the Humber Finance Society, which is run by students in the Bachelor of Commerce Finance Degree Program, put on a great speaker event.

On March 16th, 2019, World Wildlife Foundation conducted its first event of the year, "Living Planet@Campus: Designing Change for a Living Planet," with the participation of over 80 students from over 15 colleges and universities around Ontario.

The Placement Centre, in collaboration with the Association of Fashion Business Students, hosted two informational networking events with one of Canada’s largest companies, Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC).

The first Collaborative Online International (COIL) Project between Humber College and its partner institution Saxion University, Netherlands, was completed in March 2019.

The Placement Centre Hosted The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Mentoring Event on March 12, 2019 at the Humber College Lakeshore Campus. The successful event was a well-attended affair with over 100 students from Degree, Diploma and Graduate Certificate Business programs.

On Monday, March 25th, Humber’s Sustainable Fashion Committee, led by Fashion Professor Francesca D’Angelo, kicked off Earth Week at Humber with a Slow Fashion Exchange - a pop-up experience and chat on sustainable fashion.

On Thursday, March 30, Humber graduates were awarded with the prestigious Ontario Hostelry Institute’s Top 30 Under 30 Award.

Humber Hospitality – Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management students were provided the opportunity to attend and volunteer at the Hotel Association of Canada’s national conference.

On Saturday, March 2, passionate, enthusiastic and devoted Hospitality and Tourism students from diploma and degree programs came together to further develop their tourism knowledge and to prepare for summer employment.

Humber has completed a formal partnership with the PGA of Canada that aligns the completion of the Professional Golf Management program with Class “A” accreditation with the PGA of Canada.

Dr. Pierre-Pascal Gendron created and edited the content of the Value Added Tax (VAT) module of the Tax Policy Assessment Framework (TPAF) during his six-month appointment as Visiting Scholar in the Fiscal Affairs Department of the IMF in 2017-18.

Professor and Program Coordinator, Nedal Ismail, spoke at the Cold Chain Global Forum - Canada as one of the Keynote Speakers. The Cold Chain Global Forum is the largest temperature-controlled life science supply chain event of its kind, focusing specifically on the challenges and opportunities in the Canadian market. The topic of Nedal's address was "The Ramifications of Blockchain, AI, Drones and other Emerging Technologies."

To wrap up the fall semester, the Humber Marketing Program hosted team members from TechWyse Internet Marketing at its Digital Marketing Spotlight.

In the final weeks of the fall 2018 semester, students from the Creative Design Applications course (MKTG 208) in the Marketing Diploma program grabbed the opportunity to present their design campaigns to Marketing Directors of Vena Solutions.

On November 21, fourth-year Hospitality and Tourism Management Degree students put on a Health and Wellness event as part of their Event Planning and Management Course. The event attracted over 250 students at the Lake Shore Campus. Several corporate sponsors donated nutritious food samples, drinks and wellness-related prizes that were raffled off to the students.

On November 20th, a selection of PAC members of the Marketing Management and Advertising Media Management Graduate Certificate Programs met with students to discuss careers and the skills needed to succeed in both the advertising and marketing fields.

On November 21st, 50 Marketing Management and Advertising Media Management students visited IPG Mediabrands' offices in downtown Toronto. Students were given a tour of their facilities and an in-depth discussion of their amazing summer internship program. A 2018 graduate, Devin Griffin, will be our first graduate attending The Law School at Queen’s University in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The Law School is ranked 17th out of 101 Law Schools in the United Kingdom. Devin was our first student to do his field placement with the Tax Law Services Section of the Department of Justice Canada in Ottawa.

On Wednesday March 14th, 2018, the fashion-focused Night Owl Networking event was hosted by The Business School Placement Centre at the Lakeshore Campus.

A team of students from the Esthetician/Spa Management and Cosmetic Management diploma programs volunteered their time to give back to the community.

Sara Liden, a graduate of the Paralegal Studies degree program, completed her Master of Arts: Interdisciplinary Studies degree program at York University, and has now received admission to the Doctor of Philosophy Legal Studies program at Carleton University.

Bachelor of Commerce students involved in Humber’s DECA Chapter have been hard at work this year, and they have no intention of slowing down.

The Rob MacIsaac Fellowship Program seeks to cultivate innovative student research in transportation. The program finds placements for up to five fellows in diverse areas of our organization and runs every other year.

Students from all three of the fashion programs, as well as photography and cosmetics students, were engaged with the latest window installation at The Fashion Institute.

On Tuesday, February 27th, 2018, the Placement Centre in collaboration with the Management Studies student association hosted a panel discussion involving female industry professionals in conversation about women empowerment and success in the workplace.

On March 1st, 2018, The Business School Placement Centre participated in the Humber Business Association Mixer.

The Social Entrepreneurship in Action course places business students in leadership roles and is an alternative to the traditional business placement requirement for Business Administration, Business Management, and Business Marketing students.

Ken Umali, a recent graduate of Humber's Bachelor of International Development program, is currently in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, working as a Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Advisor for Uniterra.

On February 13th, an enthusiastic group of Business Students, along with members of the Placement Centre, visited the TJX Canada Home Office for a tour of the company headquarters.

Katie Drury who graduated from the Paralegal Studies degree program in June 2017 was accepted for admission at the University of Windsor Law School in the Canada and United States Dual J.D. program.

On Tuesday Feb 6th, the Bachelor of Commerce Finance Degree Program held an event in the G Commons at the Lakeshore campus for students. 50 finance degree students were in attendance and were able to ask questions of a panel of finance industry professionals.

On February 1, over 200 Fashion students and faculty had the privilege of attending the Christian Dior collection event at the Royal Ontario Museum.

In July 2017, Anita A. John, Program Coordinator of the Law Clerk program, worked at the Mongolian Chamber of Commerce and Industry as a tax and e-commerce advisor.

Effective August 9th, 2017, Keon Lee, a 2013 Paralegal Diploma graduate was appointed as a Justice of the Peace to the Ontario Court of Justice.

The Business School held its first Degree and Postgrad information session on Tuesday, January 23rd at Lakeshore campus.

This January, Marketing, Bachelor of Commerce students visited the Miele headquarters in preparation of their marketing capstone project.

In 2017, a number of our faculty members celebrated 10- and 25-year anniversaries working at the Business School. We wouldn’t be the leading polytechnic institution without all of their hard work and commitment.

On November 20th, 2017, The Business School decided to host our very own Humber College Marketing Competition in place of the Ontario Colleges Marketing Competition.

At Humber, we are committed to making sure our students get real-world experience and are career-ready. One way students are able to do this is through the Voucher for E-Business Program.

For two weekends, students from the International Development postgraduate program lived on Trenton Base, assisting with a large readiness exercise for Canadian Forces members across Ontario.

After graduating from the Humber Business School, Elisa started working at Orchard International as a Cosmetic Product Developer where it’s her job to bring a beauty product from concept to reality.

This past November, the Humber DECA-U chapter competed in Ryerson’s “Evolve” Conference. The Ryerson Invitational marks the sixth DECA Competition the Humber chapter has been a part of since September.

This coming winter, nine business school students will be getting their first real exposure to the accounting industry and a sneak preview of their future careers.

Kent Schroeder, the Director of International Development Projects, recently travelled to the Himalayan country of Bhutan where he was invited to speak about his new book to an audience of government officials, business leaders and civil society representatives. 

Art comes in all forms and can be displayed in all types of venues. Painters display their works in galleries, street artists use the urban landscape as their canvas. For Kassandra Jones, a 2017 Esthetician: Spa Management graduate, her works of art are proudly displayed on the nails of her clients.

As a tribute to Canada’s 150th Anniversary, the Humber Fashion Institute and the Fashion Management and Promotions program, presented the exhibit, “100 Years of Heritage Fashion.”

On October 1st and 2nd, 2017, three students from Humber's Fashion Management programs participated in the Canadian Retail Educators Association's inaugural Retail Charrette.

On Thursday, September 28th, The Business School Hospitality and Tourism (H&T) Club held its first-ever meetup.

Jennifer Dawson, Program Coordinator of the Fashion Management program, visited the Namuna College of Fashion and Technology on July 14, 2017.

Peter Sirois and Jim Skinner of the Business School recently returned from an assignment in Ethiopia teaching Ethiopian instructors how to teach entrepreneurship to their students.

This past June, students in the Global Business Management program launched a Humber GBM Student Association. According to the GBM Association website, their mission is to “offer support and guidance to all Global Business Management students in transition from school to the Canadian labour market."

This past August, Ionela Bacain, an Accounting Professor and Program Coordinator of the Bachelor of Commerce Accounting program, travelled to Blantyre, Malawi as a Leave for Change volunteer.

As this new academic year begins, we're excited to welcome new and returning faculty to The Business School. These professors all share a passion for teaching, an extensive list of academic credentials and years of experience working in high-ranking roles in fields like Marketing, Law, Finance and more. The faculty members joining us this year include Fabian Marks, Steve Lorini, Emily Gaszynski and Jeffery Nicholson.

Jason Stanley was a student in the Public Administration Graduate Certificate Program. Since graduating in 2005, Jason has gained a breadth of experience from a number of progressively senior capacities in multiple ministries. Most recently, Jason accepted an acting assignment as Assistant Deputy Minister, Strategy, Stewardship and Program Policy Division. Congratulations Jason on your success!

The Business School has received approval from the Law Society to allow graduates of paralegal education (Diploma) programs from accredited institutions in Ontario, to be granted advanced standing to enter into year three of the accredited Paralegal Education (Degree) program offered by The Business School.

Sanjukta Das, a Business Placement Advisor at the School of Business, could have spent her annual vacation relaxing at the beach, sightseeing abroad or reading a good book. But, instead, she decided to convert her three weeks of relaxation into an exciting, meaningful and life-changing experience.

Students from the Humber-Ningbo partnership program had a busy August after arriving in Toronto on July 31st.

In July 2017, The Business School welcomed students from our academic partners, Parul University in India and IMC University of Applied Sciences in Krems, Austria, to a two-week Leadership Beyond Boundaries program.

Students in the Fashion Management degree program completed their capstone course this past spring. The course was a major undertaking for the students, as they had to apply the knowledge, skills and experience they acquired throughout their years of study.

On Thursday, June 1st, the Humber Fashion Arts and Business Diploma program hosted workshops for the Youth Enrichment Program students from Holy Cross and St. Mary’s high school.

Fashion Group International’s (FGI) Toronto Chapter held its annual Mentor Dinner at the Hôtel Le Germain this past week.

On May 2nd, 2017, Divya M., a Business Management student, and Shawn M., a Business Administration student, represented the Humber Business School at the Skills Ontario Competition held at the Toronto Congress Centre.

From April 19-22nd, Humber degree students from the Lakeshore DECA-U chapter attended the International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Anaheim, California.

The FCBB held a networking event and awarded the Business School with the 2017 FCBB Award of Excellence.

This year, students from 11 selling classes in 8 separate Business School programs participated in the Marlies Ticket Sales Program raising a record $30,938 for Camp Oochigeas, a camp for children cancer.

Congratulations to Vathanan Jegatheesan, who has recently joined the Canadian Tamils' Chamber of Commerce (CTCC) as the Executive Director.

Business Administration students represented Humber with pride as they met BMO’s executive team including CEO William Downe, Vice Chairman Frank Techar, and the Board of Directors, before the Annual General Meeting.

On April 7th, a team of Humber Business Administration and Business Management students hosted 15 teams composed of 90 grade 12 business students from high schools across the GTA for an exciting opportunity to learn about small business management.

On Thursday March 2th, the AFBS (Association of Fashion Business Students) hosted an industry panel night moderated by Fashion Management Professor Bruce Sinclair.

The Business School Bachelor of Commerce Marketing degree has been approved by SAS (Statistical Analysis System) for the joint Business Certification Program. This certificate will put Humber students in a cutting-edge market position.

For some people, graduating from college and launching a successful career in one of the top five big banks would be enough – but not for Nicolas Salem. 

The Humber-Ningbo program, which began in 1996, is the college’s longest-standing international partnership and has produced more than 2,000 graduates.

The anniversary celebration took place on Ningbo University’s campus where Humber President, Chris Whitaker and Ningbo University Vice President, Yan Xiaojun spoke to the audience about the successful partnership between the two institutions.

My name is Christine Hagen and I am currently a second year Digital Business Management student. During my first year of studies at Humber, I really wanted to make my education count. My interest in studying abroad rose after taking a class on Social Entrepreneurship and learning about various entrepreneurs and how they decided to take their current path.

On September 20th, Fashion Group International hosted its Trend Forecasting event featuring a presentation on global trends for AW ‘17, by co-founder and Creative Director of MintModa, Sharon Graubard. This must-attend event also featured presentations on current hair trends from Owner and Salon Director at Toni&Guy Toronto, Clarissa Borg, and nail trends from business development manager from CND - Creative Nail Design, Jennifer Mather. Humber Fashion Faculty in attendance included: Jennifer Dawson, Kristi Kennedy, Anne Cramer, and Bruce Sinclair.

"I have arrived at my placement. Everything went smoothly during my training in Paris and I am settling into my Amman life well. The training in Paris was similar to our classes in finance, logistics and proposal writing and the security training was also very familiar to me from class. On Thursday, September 22, the Humber College Business School Placement Centre hosted their signature Employer Appreciation event.

Recently, a group of Ningbo and Jimei students graduated from Davenport University in Grand Rapids Michigan. Some of the students graduated from the degree program while others completed their MBA.

Thursday September 22, 2016 marked the launch of DBSA’s second event, a Lemonade stand in the L Building at Lakeshore Campus. Digital Business Management students handed out free lemonade and cookies to students and got the word out about their new student association.

Recently, Humber Spa manager Delia Fiorante received an email from the Customer Service Manager at Sherwood Village Spa about the amazing work our graduates are doing. Thank you to the entire Spa Management teaching team for helping our students shine.

On Friday, April 29^th 70 Chinese students graduated from the Humber-Ningbo and Humber-Jimei Programs. It was also an extra special celebration as Humber College and Ningbo University celebrate the 20^th anniversary of their joint partnership program.

Yale has acknowledged something that Humber knew two years ago — Supreme Court Justice Rosalie Abella is an extraordinary Canadian.

Yale Law School awarded Justice Abella an honorary degree, making her the first woman in the Ivy League school’s 315 year history to receive the distinction. She joins William Lyon Mackenzie King, Vincent Massey and Lester B. Pearson as the only Canadians honoured by the school.

The annual Business School Professional Development Day was held on June 20, 2016 at the Lakeshore Campus and it was a great success.

Humber International Marketing Professor, Amanpreet Chhina understands the need to stay current with the constant changes in trends and technology in the marketing industry. For professor Chhina, exploring the questions and issues that result from changing trends is key when analyzing research initiatives.
