Program Overview

Humber’s Hospitality - Event Management diploma program provides you with the knowledge, skills, practical experience, industry exposure and professional certifications necessary to embark on an exciting and successful career as an event management professional.

Our program provides comprehensive learning and training opportunities to prepare students for valued positions in the event industry including:

  • catering co-ordinators and managers
  • event designers
  • event marketers
  • event venue managers
  • in-person and virtual event co-ordinators and managers
  • incentive trip and event co-ordinators and managers
  • on-site logistics staff
  • production staff
  • proposal writers
  • wedding planners
  • virtual, in person or hybrid event planners

In the first semester of the program, you learn the foundational aspects of event management and gain immediate industry experience through interacting with industry professionals and working at/participating in several events. For the next three semesters, you will be thoroughly immersed in the world of event management through building on your foundational knowledge, gaining hands-on experience through attending and working at events, interacting with industry professionals, planning and executing events, and completing an industry internship. The essential skills taught prepare students to be successful in their event career area of choice.

Courses Program Standards

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  1. Support an industry and workplace service culture by adopting a positive attitude and professional decorum, accommodating diverse and special needs, and contributing as a team member.

  2. Deliver customer service and solutions that anticipate, meet and/or exceed individual expectations, as well as organizational expectations, standards and objectives.

  3. Use marketing concepts, market research, social networks, sales and revenue management strategies, relationship management skills and product knowledge to promote and sell hospitality services, products and guest experiences.

  4. Apply business and revenue models as well as basic accounting, budgeting, financial and administration skills to support the effective management and operation of a variety of organizations delivering hospitality services and products.

  5. Comply with relevant organization and workplace systems, processes, policies, standards, legal obligations and regulations, and apply risk management principles, to support and maintain efficient, safe, secure, accessible and healthy hospitality operations.

  6. Use appropriate technologies to enhance the quality and delivery of hospitality services, products and guest experiences and to measure the effectiveness of hospitality operations.

  7. Keep current with hospitality trends and issues, and interdependent relationships in the broader tourism industry* sectors to improve work performance and guide career development.

  8. Use leadership, teamwork, conflict and relationship management skills and tools, as well as knowledge of organizational behaviour, labour relations, employment standards and human rights to contribute to a positive work environment.

  9. Respond to issues and dilemmas arising in the delivery of hospitality services, products and guest experiences by using and promoting ethical behaviour and best practices of corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability.

  10. Follow the five phases of event management (assess feasibility, design the event, coordinate operations, execute on-site and evaluate the outcomes) to ensure client satisfaction.

Work Placement

Work experience is integral to developing a diverse and successful career in the event management profession. In this program, you will participate in a comprehensive placement experience (160 hours) in your final semester. During the placement, you will apply the knowledge and skills you have learned in the classroom to real event work in the field, network, and develop professional connections and relationships you will carry with you throughout your career.

Longo Faculty of Business has more than 500 industry partners. These partners provide value to you with field trips, guest speaker presentations, case studies and internship opportunities. Some of the partners of the Hospitality - Event Management diploma program include: Event Planning Companies, Wedding Planners, Arts and Music Festivals, Hotels, Conference/Convention Centres, Banquet Halls, Paradigm Events, City of Brampton Special Events Department, York Region Event Department, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, International Centre, City of Toronto Special Events Department, Four Seasons Hotel Toronto Yorkville, Superior Events Group Inc., Affair Tent & Event Rentals, Tourism Toronto, and many more.

Event Management students work with real organizations to conceive, plan and execute several events over the course of the academic year.

Study Abroad

Qualified students in this program may have a unique opportunity to complete their 4th semester living abroad in Europe or Taiwan. Students are enrolled with Humber and pay an additional program fee for this Semester 4 optional program. Participation is subject to eligibility standards and an application process.

Current opportunities include:

Semester 4 Europe: in January and February, qualified students may be based in Strasbourg, France and will spend eight weeks living, touring and studying in Europe. Students will take unique courses that count towards the completion of their fourth semester credits.

Semester 4 Taiwan: this 18-week program from the end of February through the end of June offers students the opportunity to embrace the local culture, customs and language of Taiwan and our partner institution National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism.

Each year, we offer a variety of experiential learning trip opportunities for students to study abroad. Our annual short duration experiential trips in May are approximately two weeks in length. 

Qualified students in this program may also apply to a study abroad service learning trip to contribute to a global community. Past service learning trips were to Nunavut and Nicaragua. In addition, eligible students have the opportunity to apply for a study abroad experiential trip to Peru.

These trips vary each year and are subject to availability, participation and eligibility requirements. Additional fees apply.

  • conferences and meetings

  • festivals
  • fundraising events
  • incentive travel programs
  • wedding and social events

You may also be interested in working for an event venue such as a banquet hall, hotel, an event supplier or an audio-visual production company. Whichever route you choose, Humber’s program prepares you for both your career and opens doors for you in this growing industry.

How To Become An Apprentice

Becoming an Apprentice

Find an employer willing to sponsor you as an apprentice.

Contact the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development to register as an apprentice.

Work with your employer approximately one year before attending Humber.

Domestic Students

Applications to Humber are made through ontariocolleges.ca. Be sure to submit your application by the equal consideration deadline of February 1. You may apply after February 1, however, post-February 1 applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis depending on the availability of the space in the program.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

Admission selection is based on the following three requirements:

  • Academic

    To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

    • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
      • Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U or equivalent)
      • Three Grade 11 or Grade 12 C, M or U courses in addition to those listed above

    or

    or

    Mature Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet all listed course requirements.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

    College Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

    University Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

  • English Language Proficiency

    All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

  • International Credit Evaluation

    Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a credential evaluation. Note, for international High school education course by course evaluations, ICAS must be used. For international post-secondary education, a WES evaluation must be provided. In situations where you expect to apply for transfer credit, it is recommended that a course by course WES evaluation is completed.
