Inspiring Sophie’s Run II Event Underway

Event Management students and faculty worked together to plan and create an unforgettable fundraising event for Colorectal Cancer.

Sophie's Run was first established by Nicole Chuchmach in 2008. The objective of the run is to create awareness and educate individuals about colorectal cancer, nationwide.

Hospitality faculty member, Nicole Chuchmach, is on the road running from Humber College to Parliament Hill for an important cause close to her heart – Colorectal Cancer. Her mother passed away from the disease back in 2008, and ever since then, it has been her sole focus to create awareness and educate the public on the disease. In her first run, she ran from Milton, Ontario to New York City. This year, she is running from Humber College in Toronto to Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

In November 2015, Event Management students organized a Sophie’s Run II launch event that included tickets sales, a prize table, menu featuring a salad bar and signature drink, awareness tables and entertainment with all proceeds going to the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada.

Once the launch event was complete, the students then shifted their focus to sponsorship and administration of the run. “Our students worked so hard to garner sponsorships for the event as well as manage the administrative side of things,” says Mary Jo Sterns, Program Coordinator, Event Management program. “The event wouldn’t have launched as smoothly and successfully as it did without their contributions and dedication to the cause,” she adds.

Nicole and her running partner Natalie are slated to arrive at Parliament Hill on May 16, 2016. They have led awareness events at hospitals along the way and are also making special visits to patients with Colorectal Cancer.
