1. Why insurance?

While on the surface, insurance may not seem as exciting as some other careers, when you get to learn more about it, it can be quite fascinating. Insurance affects everyone's lives as individuals, business and organizations and as a global society. Think of being able to help through situations arising from accidents, cyber-attacks or weather-related issues. There is so much that people who work in insurance can do to help during some of life's most difficult situations.

2. Is this Program Right for Me?

Are you someone who

Insurance is about helping people. Your role will be related to either protecting from eventual risk, or helping put lives or businesses back together after they have experienced a claim. Insurance allows the world to run confidently knowing that there will be assistance in the aftermath of a possible catastrophe.

3. Is the insurance industry stable?

The insurance industry is so stable that it is often referred to as "recession proof". The industry has been steadily increasing in breadth and in employment opportunities.

4. What if I know nothing about insurance, could I still be successful in the program?

The Insurance Management program will give you the knowledge and skills needed to enter into the insurance industry. As a postgraduate program, it is designed to compliment your skills, experience and prior education. Many students have blended their previous education from different areas such as health care, business, project management, IT, legal and more, to specialize in insurance in these sectors.

5. Do graduates get jobs in insurance?

The insurance industry is in a talent crisis with a large portion of the current workforce deemed to retire in the next 5-10 years. Many of our domestic and international students receive multiple job while still in the program. Often the employment opportunities outnumber the graduates from this program, giving students a choice of where to begin their career.

6. Are there opportunities for advancement?

The insurance industry has multiple opportunities for advancement and branching out into other sectors or specialties. Many organizations recognize promising talent and work toward developing that through career advancement opportunities.

7. What is the starting salary?

The overall compensation package is very attractive and often comes with benefits, stock options, RRSP’s and the possibility of a lucrative salary. The starting salary can range between $45,000 to $55,000 with the average 5 year salary in the six figure range.

8. What types of jobs are available for graduates?

Graduates typically start in roles such as:

• Claims adjusters and advisors
• Jr. account managers
• Underwriting assistants

9. Is insurance just sales?

Insurance is not just about Sales it is about helping people. The skills that will help you round out a career in insurance include

• Numeracy

• Problem-solving
• Detail-oriented
• Analytical
• Communication

10. What if I am not good at accounting or math?

Working in insurance is not reliant on expert numeracy. Some roles are more mathematically demanding like Actuaries who work with statistics, but for work in Claims, you just need to be comfortable with basic math.

Expand Your Professional Network

Throughout the school year, you'll have multiple opportunities to speak one-on-one with insurance industry professionals and expand your network. Students get invited to conferences, field trips and job/placement fairs. Companies also come on campus to guest speak and conduct interviews with students. In addition to these events, we host an Insurance Career Day where students get to meet and network with industry professionals, and the Career Summer Placement Fair that is attended by over twenty insurance companies looking to hire graduates.
