Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

Admission selection is based on the following 3 requirements:

  • Academic

    To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

    • A bachelor’s degree

    Mature Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

    College Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

    University Transfer Applicants

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

  • English Language Proficiency

    All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

  • International Credit Evaluation

    Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a WES or ICAS evaluation.

Pathways are academic routes that students can take to move from one credential to another.

PATHWAYS OUT TO A PARTNER INSTITUTION

Humber and Centenary University have entered into an agreement to facilitate the transfer of Humber graduates with appropriate prerequisite qualifications and grades for advanced standing into Centenary University.  

Graduates with a GPA of 3.0 or 75% in one of Humber's Graduate Certificates:

  • Fashion Management and Promotions

  • Human Resource Management
  • Marketing Management
  • Global Business Management
  • Public Administration

may receive up to 6 credits towards the Masters of Business Adminstration (MBA) program.  Thirty-three (33) remaining credits may be required for program completion.  Final advanced standing granted to an applicant requires an assessment of transcripts and electives taken.

Humber applicants are required to submit the following to Centenary:

  • a completed application form (with essay where applicable) along with the application fee
  • official Humber transcript sent directly to Centenary from Humber
  • verification of high school graduation
  • Letter of Recommendation from a Humber Program Coordinator, specifying why the student is a good candidate for the program.

How to Apply

Applications to Humber are made through ontariocolleges.ca. Be sure to submit your application by the equal consideration deadline of February 1. You may apply after February 1, however, post-February 1 applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis depending on the availability of the space in the program. Humber’s Fashion Management and Promotions graduate certificate program prepares you to work in the dynamic fashion industry and focuses on the management, marketing and sales of fashion apparel and accessories. Courses cover new product development and branding, fashion buying and retailing, multi-channel sales, international marketing, and product management. Visual merchandising skills combined with colour theory skills and trend forecasting give this program a dynamic, hands-on approach to the business side of fashion. The program also covers the rapidly growing promotional side of fashion including courses in integrated marketing communication and social media brand management. You will learn how to leverage and promote a brand through social media, personal blogs, Instagram, Twitter, online selling and personal website development.

Courses Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Analyze the changing face of the Canadian Textile and apparel industry in context with shifting global sourcing and manufacturing centres.

  • Determine strategies and formulate a production plan for developing new fashion/cosmetic/fragrance products that are consistent with evolving market needs using Supply Chain Management principles.

  • Strategically analyze the process of brand development, market positioning and new fashion/cosmetic/fragrance trends, and evaluate potential impact.

  • Determine entrepreneurship strategies in both large and small companies.

  • Develop replenishment processes for product inventory and develop pricing and market positioning strategies which take into account competitive pressures, manufacturing costs and corporate objectives.

  • Create visual merchandising promotional images using specialized industry software.

  • Formulate a strategic business plan based on the ever changing face of retail operations, and conduct primary research on market and manufacturing conditions in order to determine existing and potential levels of activity for particular fashion and cosmetic products.

  • Evaluate the types of multi-channel retailing methods and determine the most optimum strategic mix for an organization.

  • Evaluate product marketing in an international market.

  • Prepare and deliver a sales/marketing/promotional presentation.

  • Apply human resource and leadership knowledge and skills to enhance performance with individuals and teams to contribute to the successful creation of a new product.

  • Develop strategies to establish working relationships with clients, customers, suppliers, manufacturers, distributors and promotional agencies which maintain and strengthen their loyalty to his/her organization.

Work Placement

Gain first-hand experience in the industry with a four-week (160-hour) work placement which takes place either part time during the program or full time at the end of the program. Placements provide the valuable work experience employers seek.

This Business Graduate Certificate program is designed for degree holders who want to develop a career in the fashion industry. Students not only develop product knowledge and the business savvy skills needed to do the job, but they spend eight months developing their job strategy skills as well. Students work on a multitude of projects in real-life settings that help prepare them for a variety of careers in the fashion industry.

The Fashion Institute

Several third- and fourth-year Fashion Management classes are delivered in Humber’s Fashion Institute. The Fashion Institute is located at Lakeshore Campus and is a hub of activity for fashion students. It is a lively, charismatic place, buzzing with students exchanging ideas, be it in the lounge, computer lab, or anywhere else that inspiration might spark. The street level, store front window facilitates merchandising.

The building comes equipped with mannequins, rolling racks, hanging fixtures, shelving units and all manner of things the students might need to create real-world mock-ups, including a boardroom with a dropped ceiling for hanging merchandise. Students learn to work with a budget to design, source materials, and build their own space.

The Fashion Institute’s front window facilitates merchandising. Students pitch ideas for the window display through the fashion photo-styling course. Selected projects get transformed into stunning window displays.

The Association of Fashion Business Students (AFBS) aims to provide a connective environment that links students with the industry, as well as supports and encourages fashion forward thinking.

Humber Faculty Member Discusses Style Tribes

Starting in high school, people begin to use brands to identify with a "style tribe" says Susan Roberton, a faculty member at Humber College. On campus, that process of self-labelling continues, with subtle differences.

Your Career

According to City of Toronto data, the fashion industry employs nearly 50,000 people. Fashion design, wholesaling and retailing have grown dramatically in the last five years with 10,000 fashion-related jobs. There are 4,600 fashion retail firms in Toronto that generate annual sales of $2.6 billion. Sales have grown by 6.4 per cent in the last year. Employment in the wholesale and retail trade grew by 34.5 per cent or 13,000 jobs in the last five years.

Graduates may find employment in companies that develop, manufacture, market, import, wholesale, distribute or retail fashion apparel and accessories. Employment settings include apparel suppliers, wholesale distribution companies, fashion retail companies, importers and logistics firms, marketing divisions within major retail operations, and up and coming online businesses. The program equips you for roles such as product development manager, private label/brand manager, retail manager, event manager, retail buyer, fashion manager relating to sourcing, logistics co-ordinator, inventory control manager, visual merchandiser, promotion manager or planner. Online retailing offers positions in community management, social media marketing and opportunities in customer service inventory management.
