Program Overview

Humber’s comprehensive Human Resources Management graduate certificate program covers all the key functions in this diverse field including employment law, labour relations, training and development, pension and benefits, occupational health and safety, compensation, performance management, recruitment and selection, and human resources planning. The expertise, knowledge and management skills you acquire can be applied to any organization. Humber’s faculty draw on their many years of hands-on human resources experience and expertise to successfully guide you through this program.

The first of its kind in Canada, our program is in high demand because it prepares you to work in all areas of human resources. Core concepts are studied in the classroom and applied in a work placement to help you gain a practical understanding of human resources.

You will gain the knowledge, skills, and experience to become a highly marketable and effective human resources professional. Our program offers a comprehensive exploration of all the core components of the field including its power to influence key business decisions.

The online delivery offering of this program is not available to international students.

Courses Program Standards

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  1. Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of employee recruitment, selection, and retention plans and processes.
  2. Administer and contribute to the design and evaluation of the performance management* program.
  3. Develop, implement, and evaluate employee orientation, training, and development programs.
  4. Facilitate and support effective employee and labour relations in both non-union and union environments.
  5. Research and support the development and communication of the organization’s total compensation plan*.
  6. Collaborate with others, in the development, implementation, and evaluation of organizational health and safety policies and practices.
  7. Research and analyze information needs and apply current and emerging information technologies to support the human resources function.
  8. Develop, implement, and evaluate organizational development* strategies aimed at promoting organizational effectiveness.
  9. Present and evaluate communication messages and processes related to the human resources function of the organization.
  10. Manage own professional development and provide leadership to others in the achievement of ongoing competence in human resources professional practice.
  11. Facilitate and communicate the human resources component of the organization’s business plan.
  12. Conduct research, produce reports, and recommend changes in human resources practices.

Work Placement

Get human resources management work experience with a work placement (minimum 160 hours required). The placement is completed full-time in the third semester.

Human resources departments across all industries need trained human resources professionals who have business acumen and can help organizations to acquire talent, train, compensate, motivate and retain the best-fit employees. The choices available within human resources are extensive - your career will remain interesting and challenging for many years. The program equips you for roles such as health and safety officer, recruiter, talent acquisition co-ordinator, human resources co-ordinator, labour relations assistant, compensation analyst, training co-ordinator, and benefits administrator.

The Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA) recognizes the program as meeting the coursework requirements for the HRPA designations - Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP), and Certified Human Resources Leader. Additional requirements may apply. Note: The additional credential(s) requirements are determined by the granting body, which is independent of the College. Students are encouraged to obtain the specific requirements directly from the granting body before enrolling.

How To Become An Apprentice

Becoming an Apprentice

Find an employer willing to sponsor you as an apprentice.

Contact the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development to register as an apprentice.

Work with your employer approximately one year before attending Humber.

If you’re in high school – grade 11 or 12 – you can earn co-op education credits through work placements in some skilled trades.

How to Apply

Domestic Students

Applications to Humber are made through ontariocolleges.ca. Be sure to submit your application by the equal consideration deadline of February 1. You may apply after February 1, however, post-February 1 applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis depending on the availability of the space in the program.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

Admission selection is based on the following three requirements:

  • Academic

    To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

    • A bachelor’s degree

    Mature Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet all listed course requirements.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

    College Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

    University Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

  • English Language Proficiency

    All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

  • International Credit Evaluation

    Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a credential evaluation. Note, for international High school education course by course evaluations, ICAS must be used. For international post-secondary education, a WES evaluation must be provided. In situations where you expect to apply for transfer credit, it is recommended that a course by course WES evaluation is completed.
