Program Overview

Humber’s Bachelor of Commerce – Healthcare Management degree program gives you the optimal mix of core business and health-care specific skills to launch your career in one of Canada’s most exciting and fastest growing sectors.

In our program, you will begin by acquiring fundamental business skills in financial management, law, accounting, economics, operations management, organizational behaviour, statistics and quantitative methods. Then, you will focus on developing healthcare-specific skills that are highly valued and sought by employers. Our health care specialization courses include health information technology, health data and analysis, population health, healthcare strategy, healthcare financial management, health economics, healthcare policy and management, and a healthcare management project.

This program was designed in consultation with practising industry leaders to ensure you will learn and practise the skills you need to succeed in today’s complex healthcare environment. While in the program, you will also gain valuable experience through project work directly connected to industry, professional work experience and a curriculum that focuses on real-world and contemporary issues in healthcare management. The program ends with a capstone project in the final semester. Students work with input from industry stakeholders to address or solve a specific healthcare management problem in this project.

When you finish the program, you will be well prepared and qualified for entry-level positions in healthcare management in several sectors including hospitals, clinics, government, agencies, private sector providers, suppliers, non-profit organizations and consulting.

Work-Integrated Learning  

The program requires that you complete 14 weeks/420 hours of a paid [Work-integrated Learning] in the summer between your sixth and seventh semesters. This gives you the hands-on, real-world experience that employers value. Your field experience will give you the opportunity to explore the field you’d like to work in when you graduate. We will work with employers and our industry partners to help you identify opportunities to pursue.

Humber awards degree scholarships automatically to graduating high school students based on academic achievement. See this following chart for details. Some of the scholarships are renewable each year if you maintain an average of 80 per cent or more.

Diploma to Degree Transfer Student Scholarship

Humber awards degree scholarships automatically to students entering any Humber degree program who have completed a two or three-year diploma from a publicly-funded college. Students who have achieved a program GPA of 80% or better will be awarded a one-time scholarship of $2,500 in recognition of their academic achievement at the diploma level. Diplomas do not have to be related to the degree program of choice and are not tied to the eligibility for advanced standing or transfer credit. No application is required. Your Career

According to the Conference Board of Canada, the healthcare sector, consisting of healthcare organizations; health education and research; health and life sciences industries (including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, medical informatics); suppliers of medical equipment and supplies; and government employs many thousands of people in Ontario. Its performance is a major factor in the productivity and the growth and strength of the economy. In  ther largest provinces (Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta), healthcare expenditures account for about 40 per cent of total government spending, making healthcare the most important single program in those provinces and the others, including territories. With expected demographic changes in Canada, healthcare spending and staffing needs at all levels of operations are expected to grow faster than inflation.

Graduates of our program may expect employment prospects for work within a variety of settings. Opportunities can be found in hospitals, medical offices, community care organizations, public health, benefits administration and insurance, health-care consulting firms, professional services firms, professional associations, think tanks, and government. Graduates of the program will be well-positioned to respond to the needs of the sector with strong academic and applied knowledge in the principles of business and their application to the unique issues and demands of the health sector. While the majority of jobs are in operations, graduates will also be prepared to work in analytical jobs in the areas of consulting and health policy, as well as business development and advocacy.

Applications are made through ontariocolleges.ca. We assess applications based upon various factors which may include: the date of your application, the competitiveness of the program, your academic history, additional requirements (if applicable) and the program availability.

Admission Requirements

Admission selection is based on the academic criteria indicated. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission.

Admission selection is based on the following three requirements:

  • Academic

    To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

    • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
      • Grade 12 English (ENG4U or equivalent) minimum 65 per cent
      • Grade 12 Mathematics (MDM4U, MCB4U, MGA4U, MCV4U or MHF4U or equivalent) minimum 60 per cent (Students who do not possess Grade 12U Mathematics or who have achieved a grade below 60 per cent may be considered for admission.  Students will be required to complete a math equivalency course during their first semester at Humber.)
      • Four Grade 12 U or M courses in addition to those listed above
      • Overall minimum grade point average (GPA) 65 per cent

    Mature Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet all listed course requirements.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

    College Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

    University Transfer Applicants

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

  • English Language Proficiency

    All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

  • International Credit Evaluation

    Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a credential evaluation. Note, for international High school education course by course evaluations, ICAS must be used. For international post-secondary education, a WES evaluation must be provided. In situations where you expect to apply for transfer credit, it is recommended that a course by course WES evaluation is completed.

Scholarships

Humber Degree Scholarships

Humber awards degree scholarships automatically to graduating high school students based on academic achievement. See this following chart for details. Some of the scholarships are renewable each year if you maintain an average of 80 per cent or more.

95%+ $4,000 renewable
90 - 94.9% $3,500 renewable
85 - 89.9% $3,000 renewable
80 - 84.9% $2,000 renewable
75 - 79.9% $1,500 one time

Degree Transfer Scholarships ($1,500 - $2,500)

Humber automatically awards degree transfer scholarships to students entering any Humber degree program who have completed a one-year Ontario college certificate* or a two- or three-year diploma with a GPA of 80 per cent or more from a publicly-funded college. Students who have achieved a program GPA of 80 per cent or more will be awarded a one-time scholarship of $1,500 for a certificate program or $2,500 for a diploma program in recognition of their academic achievement. Certificates and diplomas do not have to be related to the degree program of choice and are not tied to the eligibility for advanced standing or transfer credit. No application is required
