Program Overview

Whether you are an HR professional, plan administrator, or a member of a pension committee, a comprehensive understanding of registered pension plans is essential. This includes the ability to interpret and accurately complete federal and provincial regulatory reporting documentation. Additionally, you should be familiar with emerging trends in pension design and investment, government legislation, actuarial valuations, and pension accounting. The Pension Plan Administration Certificate (PPAC) program equips you with this vital knowledge.

Note: The PPAC program must be completed within five years from the start date of your first module.

Compulsory Courses

PPAC 010 Introduction to Pension Plans
  Start Date: May 2025, September 2025  
This course is designed to teach pension basics - terminology, design, funding, etc. Basic retirement and estate planning concepts are also studies to give participants a solid understanding of how pensions are integrated into the retirement planning process.

PPAC 020 Legislation and Pension Plans
  Start Date: May 2025, September 2025  
This course focuses on provincial and federal legislation, required and the resultant effects on plan design. It also deals with plan administration and related issues.

PPAC 030 The Dollars and Cents of Pensions
  Start Date: May 2025, September 2025  
This course examines key financial concepts, pension governance, actuarial valuations, pension fund liabilities, financial reporting issues and the various implications on cash flow.

Faculty Highlights

Chris Vanden Haak

Chris Vanden Haak is a retirement actuary with extensive experience as both a senior consultant to retirement plan sponsors at a leading consulting firm, and as a senior executive at one of Canada’s largest defined benefit pension plans. He has a deep background in both operational and governance roles and is adept at managing diverse stakeholder relationships.

Passionate about retirement security, Chris believes in the power of effective risk management for ensuring affordable and secure retirement systems. His experience has given him a unique perspective on the holistic integration of governance, stakeholder engagement, plan design and sound financial management practices to secure and meaningful retirement systems.

As a recognized thought leader, he thrives on engaging diverse audiences in dialogue around complex actuarial, financial and risk topics – advancing knowledge and fostering informed decision-making.

Chris is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, and is a Chartered Director. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Brock University and a post-degree diploma in Actuarial Science from the University of Waterloo.
