Revamped Fundraising Management Grad Cert Brings New Faculty to the Fall Program
The Fundraising Management Postgrad was re-launched this fall with a new curriculum and several new Professors, including two Humber alumni! The team is bringing new ideas and experiences to Humber. It is especially gratifying to see the program evolve to a place where we now have several professors who started their careers in fundraising at Humber returning to teach the next generation of professionals. All of the new recruits are professionally working with nonprofit organizations, bringing real-time experience into the classroom.
Farzana Rajwani (MA, CFRE) completed the Humber Fundraising Management program several years ago, using it as a springboard for her Master’s degree in Philanthropy at St. Mary’s. She has worked in the University and Heath Sector, recently taking on a new role at University Health Network (UHN), Foundation as Campaign Director. Farzana developed and is teaching the Introduction to Fundraising course, with a focus on common fundraising methodology and inclusive philanthropy. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Education and recently completed the CIVIC Action DiversityCity Fellowship. She is delighted to be applying her experience in a teaching role and joining the students on their learning journeys.
Nicole Clarkson (MA, CHRL) graduated from Humber in 2013, following years in corporate Human Resources. She transitioned into Fundraising and now leads our HR course. After the program, she went on to pursue her MA in Leadership and worked in fund development with Laurier University and SC Johnson in a community relations role. Bringing a strong background in HR, corporate volunteerism partnered with her fundraising expertise, she has redeveloped the course and is helping students prepare for work in the field. She especially wants to bring practices into content and classroom that recognizes the Truth and Reconciliation Report and the calls to action.
Sophia Dunkley (LLB), is no stranger to Humber, having taught for several years in the Paralegal program. Outside of Humber, Sophia Dunkley is the principal of LawLPS, a legal professional services firm providing solutions to its clients specializing in charities and not-for-profit law and other solicitor services. Sophia advises charitable foundations and not-for-profit organizations on a variety of issues, including corporate governance, board fiduciary duties, trust law, charity regulation, and compliance oversight, as well as income tax issues. Sophia also worked in the area of philanthropic advisory services within the estate and trust division of a top-tier Canadian bank. Sophia uses her diverse background, knowledge, and expertise to introduce our students to the legal and ethical realities related to fundraising and philanthropic management.
Tessa Chan joined Humber fall to teach the Financial Management course. She brings to the classroom her experience as the Controller at The Bentway, Toronto’s leader in re-imagining how we build, experience, activate, and value public space together. The Bentway Conservancy is an independent charity, anchored on the exciting, ever-changing site located under Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway. Tessa is an experienced arts administrator with a passion for building relationships within the community while working to ensure programs are produced in the most cost-efficient manner without sacrificing artistic integrity. She began her career at CIBC Mellon, before transitioning to the charitable sector. She was the Director of Finance at Calgary Opera where she was at the helm of the capital campaign as plans were underway for a new office. Tessa is bringing her passion for the arts, and strong financial background into the class demonstrating the importance of excellent management in the work of fundraising and philanthropy.
